Leinster Handball
There was only one clash in the Leinster handball championships in the 60 x 30 court last week that had purple and gold involvement and it provided an all Wexford clash in the junior singles as Paul Lambert and Miley Connors met.
It was a good night for the man from St Joseph’s as Lambert played some fantastic handball in his win on a 21-14, 21-8 score line over Miley Connors from Barntown who was never given an opportunity to settle in the game by his fellow county man.
There is plenty of Wexford involvement in the championships over the coming week and with soaring temperatures outside there will be oven like conditions ahead for the brave handballers of the purple and gold this coming week.
Wexford Famers Co-op 60 x 30 Championships
The remaining semi finals of this year’s big alley handball season took place over the past week in venues across county Wexford. The big game of the past week was the senior doubles clash of St Mary’s duo Tommy Hynes and Paul Carthy against St Joseph’s pairing Paul Lambert and Gavin Buggy. On this occasion after a gripping contest it was the men from St Mary’s who advanced to the final, as Hynes and Carthy won out 21-15, 21-20.
Darren O’Toole from Coolgraney had to pull out his entire top class handball to get the better of Galeon Riordan from Ballyhogue in the semi final of the intermediate singles. This fascinating game ended up in favour of O’Toole the 2012 handballer of the year on a 21-12, 19-21, 21-16 score.
Riordan was on the wrong side of the score line again in the intermediate doubles semi final as he and Peter Hughes went down in another close game 21-15, 19-21, 21-19 to St Mary’s duo of Matthew Hynes and Paddy Haughton.
Michael Goggins secured a final berth in the junior B singles as the Barntown player defeated Padraic Roberts from Kilmyshall on a 21-14, 21-8 score. Ballymitty duo Seamie O’Neill and Paul Cleary were very impressive in their semi final win in the Junior C doubles as they saw off Timmy Farrell and Tom Murphy from Kilmyshall 21-7, 21-2. However there will be Kilmyshall man in the final as John Murphy and James Nolan had too much fire power for Martin brother Richard and PJ from Bridgetown as the Kilmyshall men won 21-6, 21-15
John Roche secured the last final spot of the season as he closed out the last semi final beating Ballymitty player Frank Maddock on a 21-11, 21-14 score in favour of the Castlebridge man.
