Six of the best in Juvenile Finals
Wexford Juvenile handballers produced a remarkable six gold medals at Leinster final stage this weekend .
Colm Parnell and Ciaran Power got the medal haul underway when they colected the under 12 doubles crown by beating Robert Dowling and Jack Barcoe from Kilkenny on a 15-14, 15-10 score line , while their under 12 singles county man Todd Hynes must wait for another chance as he lost out in the under 12 singles final going down 15-12, 15-10 to Ciaran Cooney from Kilkenny.
Patrick Boland delivered a fine performance to capture the under 13 singles crown as he brushed aside Eoin Ryan from Kilkenny in impressive fashion.
Tomas Hal and Daniel Kavanagh sprung Wexford’s third triumph of the weekend in the Under 14 doubles final by beating Shane Dunne and Dion Burke from Kilkenny.
The boys under 15 singles representative Keith Armstrong was unlucky to lose out in the final , as he found Padraig Cooney from Kilkenny in to good form on the night. His doubles counterparts Seamus Sinnott and Stevie Lawlor also came close but got no rewards as they were beaten in the under 15 doubles final by Dylan Cahill and Sean Carey from Kilkenny.
It was handed over to the girls of county Wexford to scoop the remaining Leinster titles. Holy Hynes blitzed her way to success in the under 13 singles final as she was too good for Sorcha Delany winning on a 15-1, 15-12 score line. Tara Doyle and Emma Goff came very close in the under 13 doubles final but after winning the opening set 15-2 against Niamh Gleeson and Niamh Rock efrom Kilkenny the balck and amber girls got the better in the remaining sets to win 15-4, 15-7.
Chloe Cash and Courtney Browne secured success in the under 15 doubles for Wexford by defeating Deirdre Purcell and Carol Walsh from Kilkenny on a 11-15, 15-2, 15-2 score line.
Ciara Rossiter completed the success for Wexford this weekend by capturing a Leinster title at under 17 singles in her first year as a handball player, the top sport’s athlete from ST Martin’s club can add handball to her success list now as she scooped the rewards 21-8, 21-9 against Niamh O’Shea from Kilkenny.
Dissapointment in All Ireland semi finals…
It was a tough week on the 60 x 30 courts at a national stage for Wexford handballers as three players suffered defeats in the Al Ireland semi finals of their repsective events.
Galeon Riordan can feel the hardest done by of the lot however as he came oh so close to a big win in the minor singles semi final before going down to Padraig Quish from Limerick . Riordan began in impressive fashion taking the opening set 21-19. Quish took control in the second set and won it 21-14 , with the match evenly poised the third set was a thriller and it was heart break for the Ballyhogue man as he served three times for the match but eventually lost 21-20 in the third game.
Darren O’Toole did not produce anything near his best in the Junior singles All Ireland semi final as he was beaten 21-15, 21-6 by David Hickey from Tpperary.
It was a night to forget for Gavin Buggy as his good friend and former doubles partner Dominic Lynch from Kerry powered past Buggy in the over 35 singles semi final winning 21-8, 21-2 for the kingdom.
