Weekly Roundup – Bitter & Sweet for Castlebridge Handball Club
An extremely busy week for Wexford Handball saw Castlebridge Handball Club secure a Leinster title in the team of four event at Intermediate grade. This was a great achievement as they defeated Clough of Kilkenny in the final. Eugene Kelly played the first singles and got off to a flyer winning 21-16 & 21-9 which left team Castlebridge in a very good position heading into the doubles pairing. Playing in the doubles were Malachy Whelan and David Kenny and they showed their class on the night by winning 21-12 and 21-11, this left Castlebridge in a very dominating position, 36 points up with one singles match to play. Jason Murphy won his first singles game on a score line of 21-11 and this was more than enough to ensure the Kilkenny club could find no way back. A great result for the Castlebridge men who are benefiting greatly from the new structured county championship as all four are still strongly competing
in the County Championship.
Jason Murphy (Wexford) played the All-Ireland Final this week of the Intermediate Hardball at Talbots Inch, Co Kilkenny. His opponent was Colm Jordan (Cork) who won the 60 x 30 intermediate All Ireland final last year. This proved to be a tightly fought contest with both players producing some great strokes. Jason Murphy found the pure power of Colm Jordan a little too hard to handle and was defeated on a score line of 21-14 & 21-13. This was a magnificent achievement for the Wexford man as only last year he won the junior hardball All Ireland Final and to reach the Intermediate final at the age of 23 years old is fantastic. Without doubt a bright future lies ahead of Murphy in the game of handball should he persist with the progress he is showing.
On Saturday last John Roche (Castlebridge) took part in the Leinster Masters Wall Ball competition at Ballacolla, Co. Laois where he was defeated in the Leinster final by Paddy Donovan of Laois. This was a great achievement as the County Wall Ball championship has yet to be played and several other counties are concentrating hard on the development of the Wall Ball. John defeated PJ Tobin of Kildare 18-12 and defeated Kevin Brennan (Laois) on a score line of 21-11 in the Leinster semi final. Paddy Donovan (Laois) won the final on a score line of 21-10 but the Wexford man can be very proud of his achievement as at present he is firmly focused on the County 60 x 30 championship and his preparation for the upcoming Leinster 60 x 30 championship.
