Wexford 2-21 Laois 1-18
Laois battled hard in Wexford Park, but in the end Seamus Plunkett’s side came out on the wrong side of a thrilling encounter with the Model County. The result all but ends Laois’ promotion hopes, although Wexford’s remain firmly alive.
Laois led 0-3 to 0-0 early on but Wexford got back level and then on 13 minutes found the net through Gary Moore, the full-forward rifling home after a good assist from Rory Jacob. The remainder of the first half was extremely keenly contested by both sides, but a straight red for Cha Dwyer was a major blow for Laois before the break, and Liam Dunne’s side led 1-10 to 0-10 at half-time.
John Purcell’s goal on 43 minutes brought Laois right back into the game, but Wexford led by three again following scores by Byrne (2) and O’Keeffe. Laois made a right battle of it in the closing stages, and got level again at 1-16 apiece with 12 minutes to go.
However, they weren’t able to get into the lead at any stage and Wexford hit four points without reply before wrapping up the win late on with a goal from Shane Tompkins. Wexford face Cork next weekend in a do-or-die battle to see who qualifies for the promotion play-off.
Lee Chin (Pictured) went off in the first half with a hip injury adding to Liam Dunne’s woe’s. The original half back trio, Andrew Shore (broken foot), Richie Kehoe (suspended) and now Lee Chin are all unavailable for selection at present.
