GAA Handball All Ireland Open Singles
Gavin Buggy was unable to follow up his recent provincial title in Senior handball as he bowed out of the GAA Handball All Ireland Open singles at the last 16 stage during the past week as he was crushed 21-6, 21-8 by Meath man Brian Carroll who finally got one over Gavin Buggy who has been a thorn in the side of Carroll on many occasions in recent years.
GAA Handball Colleges 40 x 20 Championships.
Galeon Riordan from St Peter’s College in Wexford made it all the way to the All Ireland semi final in the intermediate singles in college’s handball last week. In the recent Leinster final he progressed with the title after a 15-8, 15-7 win over Dylan Sheridan from Kells in County Meath but he was to lose out in the All Ireland semi final as he was closely beaten 15-12, 15-13 by Colm Grehan from Ard Scoil Ris in Limerick.
St Peter’s other representatives in the Leinster Colleges championships Ben O’Shea and Oisin Foley in the Junior Doubles lost out in the provincial final on a 15-12, 15-11 score line to Robert Fox and Peter Smyth from KellsCommunity College in Meath.
GAA Handball Leinster 40 x 20 Championships
Galeon Riordan collected a second Leinster medal of the week in the Leinster 40 x 20 Minor singles final when he produced a terrific display of handball to see off the dogged challenge of Martin Mullins from Carlow. The Ballyhogue man who recently collected a Leinster colleges title was a 21-19, 21-15 winner over the Carlow man and will have every chance of picking up Wexford’s first minor All Ireland title in the small court in many years.
John Bail and Richie Culleton saw their dreams of Leinster glory evaporate for another season as they succumbed to Kilkenny duo Eammon and Jimmy Purcell from Kilkenny on a 21-14, 21-17 score line in the Golden Masters B Doubles final.
Jim Doyle was also left to think of what might have been this season as he lost out in the final of the Ruby Masters Singles final as he was unable to stop Paddy Reilly from Kilkenny as the Marble City man won on a 21-10, 21-14 score.
Wexford Farmers Co-op GAA Handball 40 x 20 Championships Semi Finals
The old guard served out the warning to any pretenders to the throne in cruel fashion last week as Gavin Buggy and Barry Goff powered to the Senior Singles final of this years Wexford farmers Co-op County Championships.
Gavin Buggy was the winner of a Wexford town derby as the St Mary’s man triumphed on a 21-19, 21-15 score line over St Joseph’s club man Paul Lambert.
Barry Goff from Castlebridge handed out a handballing lesson to Peter Hughes in the second semi final as the Ballyhogue man was blown out of the water on 21-4, 21-1 score line in St Joseph’s last week.
Laura Anne Furlong is the first lady through to the final of the Ladies Senior singles as she won a very good game against Anne Boland from Templeudigan on a 21-17, 20-21, 21-10 score line which sees the Bridgetown woman through to the final.
Benny Doyle came out on top in the first semi final of the Intermediate singles when he defeated Malachy Whelan from Castlebridge on a 21-16, 21-11 score line.
The final of the junior singles will be a battle between Michael Busher from Bridgetown and Fergal McWilliams from Horeswood after the two men secured wins during the past week. Busher was a 21-8, 21-10 winner over Sean Stanners from St Martins, while Fergal McWilliams was a 21-10, 21-15 winner over Damien Kelly from Coolgraney.
The finalists are now known for the Junior C singles final also Robert Byrne from Bridgetown took the first semi final as he beat Phil Coleman from Ballymitty 2118, 21-17.Eugene English secured the second semi final with a closely fought out 21-15, 21-20 win over Paddy Cheevers from Horeswood.
One semi final of the Junior C doubles was played during the past week and it saw a win for Davidstown with Kevin Doyle and Alan Armstrong coming out on the right side of a 12-21, 21-17, 21-17 score line over Tom Dempsey and Eugene English from Ballyhogue.
The Junior D singles semi final between Sean O’Neill and Robbie Codd was an all Templeudigan clash as the two Rathnure senior hurling players went head to head with O’Neill coming out on top 21-10, 21-11.
The semi finals of the Masters B singles saw Shane Rossiter (Ballymitty) beat Ricky Barron from Barntown on a 21-2, 21-10 score , while Damien Kelly (Coolgraney) secured the second semi final spot after a 21-13, 21-11 win over Tom Connors from Barntown.
Phil Coleman and Shane Rossiter combined well in the Masters B doubles for Ballymitty and had a tight 21-15, 21-17 win over Tom Cummins and Richie Ryan from Horeswood.
