Wexford Farmers Co-op 40 x 20 Adult Handball finals
Gavin Buggy and Tommy Hynes from St Mary’s were crowned Wexford Farmers Co-op 40 x 20 Senior doubles champions after they won the final last Wednesday night by beating David Kenny and Jason Murphy from Castlebridge. For the Castlebridge men it was a step into the unknown as they both competed in their first ever senior final in either court, meanwhile Gavin Buggy and Tommy Hynes have many county senior singles and doubles titles between them over the years. The experience and greater handball power saw them overcome the Castlebridge men on a 21-14, 21-7 score line as Gavin Buggy completed the double of senior singles and senior doubles titles.
The Intermediate doubles title has gone the way of Horeswood as Benny Doyle and Barry McWilliams came out victorious last week in the final against Oulart duo of Dinny Lyndon and Justin Heffernan. Indeed it was the men in red and black that got off to the better start and won the opening set on a 21-6 score line. However, Doyle and McWilliams from Horeswood got going in the second set and never looked back winning the next two sets on a 21-14,21-12 score line.
Dinny Lyndon and Justin Heffernan were given a chance to make amends in the Junior doubles final as the Oulart duo entered two grades in this year’s championship. However, the Castlebridge duo of Malachy Whelan and John Roche were not in a mood to let sentiment win and Roche and Whelan again handed defeat to Heffernan and Lyndon from Oulart this time the Oulart men lost out 21-20, 21-9.
Jim Berry took the honours on the double in Junior B winning both the singles and doubles title over the past week. In the singles final Jim Berry got the better of comeback man Paddy Haughton from St Mary’s. The Barntown man won the singles final after a great battle on a final score line of 21-14, 16-21, 21-12. Berry and Haughton once again locked horns in the doubles final and once again Barntown came out on top. Jim Berry was joined by Andy Connors and their combined forces saw them pick up the title , 12-21,21-8,21-14 against James Murray and Paddy Haughton from St Mary’s.
Michael Busher got Bridgetown into the winners circle in the small alley when he secured the title in Junior C singles after a hard fought win against JR Finn from Ballymitty, as Busher won the day on a 21-12, 17-21, 21-15. However, there was revenge for Finn in the Junior C doubles final as he joined forces with County Vice chairman Alan O’Neill in a 21-12, 21-16 win over Michael Busher and Eammon Codd from Bridgetown.
Tomás O’Shea won his first ever county title over the past week as he was the winner of the Junior D singles title after winning through against Paddy Curran from St Martin’s. Tomás O’Shea was the victor on a 21-6, 21-5 score line.
In the Junior D doubles final it was to be an all Ballymitty affair with Paul Reddy and John Moran up against club mates Miley Byrne and Alan Diskin. The Reddy /Moran combo was the winner on the night on a 21-16, 21-7 score line.
Pechelli English was back in the winner’s enclosure during the past week as well, as he took the honours in the Masters A singles final beating Frank Maddock from St Martin’s in a very close final, as the Davidstown man eventually saw off Maddock on a 21-11, 11-21, 21-18 score line.
In the Master A doubles final Frank Maddock atoned for his defeat in the singles decider by joining with long time partner Donal Doyle for a 21-11, 11-21, 21-18 win over Ricky Barron and Mick Donovan from Barntown.
Seamus Buggy made a victorious return to the handball courts during the past week as he combined with his brother Ned from St Joseph’s to capture the Diamond Masters A Doubles title on a 21-9,21-8 score line against Horeswood duo of Billy Molloy and Gareth Somers.
