Team of Six glory for Purple and Gold.
Wexford best six under 12-13 handball boys got together last weekend to win a remarkable team of six Leinster title as they saw off old rivals Kilkenny in a pulsating final on a 84-79 score line last weekend. This is a huge team event annually and with all the top players in the age group eligible for this Wexford certainly have won a big title by defeating the black and amber. The Wexford team was made up of Glen Murphy, Ciaran Power, Todd Hynes, Cian Kehoe, Colm Parnell and Richard Browne and they head into the All Ireland semi finals and finals next weekend with high hope of taking the top honour for this team tournament.
In the team of four under 16/17 tournament Wexford did not go as well as they failed to get by the Kilkenny boys losing out in the final on a 60-23 score line. Valuable experience for the future was none the less gained by the Wexford team of four that included Jack Roche, Darren Murphy, Dylan Bolger and Dean Whelan.
Hynes loses out in Final
Holly Hynes one of Wexford most promising underage girls handball players in recent years lost out in the All Ireland under 14 singles final last weekend in Crinkle County Offaly. Holly the daughter of famous Wexford star Tommy Hynes playing for the St Mary’s club in Wexford town was beaten last Saturday by very talented Clare player Ella Donnellan on a 15-2, 15-11 score line. Despite this defeat capturing the Leinster title was a huge achievement for Holly and she also was a recent finalists in the ladies junior singles final in the county championship and also was a junior doubles winner with Marguerite Gore in the recent county championships.
All Ireland 40 x 20 Finals
Tony Breen was left with the gut feeling of not knowing what might have been as he was forced to pull out of his All Ireland title bid last weekend as he has been suffering from illness during the past two weeks. Everyone in Wexford handball would like to wish Tony a speedy recovery and hope to see him dominating the big court when 60 x 30 season comes around.
Ned Buggy and Gareth Somers get the chance next weekend to claim an All Ireland title , on Saturday afternoon in Ballymore Eustace county Kildare at 4pm the St Joseph’s Horeswood combination take to the courts in the Diamond Masters A doubles final where they will meet Cavan duo Greg Sheridan and Patsy Hand in the final.
Wexford Farmers Co-op 40 x 20 County Handball Finals
The finals of this years Wexford farmers Co-op 40 x 20 handball championships continued over the past week and the main final of the week saw the senior doubles crown go to St Joseph’s after Gavin Buggy and Paul Lambert won a pulsating final on a 19-21, 21-20, 21-15 score line over Barntown duo Mikie Berry and Miley Cash.
James Bergin and Donal Doyle (St Martin’s) were the top dogs in the intermediate doubles final as they got over the finishing line on a 18-21, 21-16, 21-13 score line against Castlebridge duop of Malachy Whelan and John Roche.
Shane Rossiter brought the junior b singles title back to Ballymitty when he got the better of Paddy Cheevers from Horeswood last week on a 21-8, 21-20 score line, while Richard Flynn from Templeudigan won the junior D singles title by overcoming Tommy Cummins from Horeswood on a 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 score.
Mick Armstrong delivered the good in the Masters A singles final for Davidstown defeating Frank Maddock on a 21-7, 21-8 score line, and the golden Masters B singles crown went to John Bail from St Martin’s as he saw off Jimmy Dunne from Kilmyshall 13-21, 21-20, 21-9.
A quadruple of stars lined out in an all St Joseph’s Diamond Masters doubles final and it was Buggy brothers Seamus and Ned who got the better of the Leacy brother Pat and Harry on a 21-19, 18-21, 21-15 score line.
James Stanners (St Martin’s) won his first ever adult title collecting the Men’s beginners singles defeating Tommy Haughton on a 21-13, 21-9 score line.
The last two finals of the Ladies handball county championships saw Marguerite Gore take the top prize beating her St Mary’s clubmate Holly Hynes on a 21-8, 21-7 score line , while the ladies junior B singles crown went to Olivia Sweeny from St Joseph’s as she beat Lorraine Maddock from St Martins on a 21-20, 21-11 score line.
