Wexford Farmers Co-op Senior Handball singles.
Barry Goff from Castlebridge continued his impressive run in this year’s Wexford Farmers Co-op Senior singles championship with a blistering performance to see off one of the form handballers in the county Paul Lambert (St Joseph’s).
Barry Goff who made his return to handball after a long break last season and has shown his appetite for the game is as strong as ever and his handball skills are still improving, with this showing is one of the big contenders for the senior title this year. Goff was flawless in a 21-10, 21-3 win over Paul Lambert the current Leinster Junior singles champion.
Paul Carthy (St Mary’s) is keeping well in contact in the shake up too with a tough win during the past week as he got the better of David Kenny from Castlebridge in a three game thriller. The first game went to the Wexford town man Carthy on a 21-17 score line but the never say die attitude, shown once again by David Kenny, saw him take the second game 21-15. However, Paul Carthy responded to the challenge and took a brilliant third game on a 21-19 score line.
Leinster 60 x 30 Handball championships.
Paul Lambert and Peter Hughes began their Leinster Junior doubles challenge by dishing out a hammering to Falsey brothers Michael and Ollie from Kilkenny, as the Marble city men were thrashed on a 21-4,21-8 score line.
Current Leinster champions, Castlebridge duo Eugene Kelly and Jason Murphy were made to work all the way in their opening round game in the junior doubles against Fergal O’Riain and Mick O’Donnell from Dublin. The champions were rocked off course in the opening set and lost 21-17. However, that proved to be the big wake up call for the Castlebridge boys as they upped their game and stormed to victory, winning the remaining two sets 21-7,21-1 to advance to the next round .
There was a fantastic all Wexford clash in the Junior B singles during the past week. Diarmuid Smyth and Jim Connors clashed .It was to be Diarmuid Smyth’s night but only after he overcame a very reluctant opponent and the final score line in Smyth’s favour of 21-14,11-21,21-19 showed that both players certainly gave it all on the night.
JR Finn and Alan O’Neill lost out in the junior B doubles championships last week as they went down to the very strong Offaly partnership of Kevin Cooke and Seán Ryan ,the Ballymitty duo lost out on a 21-8,21-17 score line.
Shane Rossiter had a very good win in the Masters B singles, beating Brian McCarthy from Westmeath on a 21-18, 21-5 score line. Joining Rossiter in the second round is John Roche from Castlebridge who blew Andy Mulligan from Westmeath out of the water with a 21-6,21-16 score line .
Jim Doyle advanced alsoin the Diamond Masters A singles after a tough opening game in which Doyle beat Paddy Murray from Dublin on a 21-18,the Wexford man steeped it up a gear in the second set to take the win 21-5.
