Wexford GAA has been convulsed since Cork’s proposals to reconstitute the National Hurling League were unveiled earlier this week. The issue has been aired on national and local radio, in the Irish Times, Independent and Examiner and on RTÉ TV news when Tom Dempsey spoke on the matter.
From the recent comments of both the Cork and Limerick county chairmen, it’s clear they view playing in Division 1B as a major negative for their counties. It is obvious that playing in Division 1B is seen as a disadvantage from a number of perspectives:
- A playing point of view.
- Attendance point of view.
- Financial consideration.
Based on this year’s final league positions after an intense competition all counties were placed equally in their various divisions. Why in any new proposal should any county be removed unilaterally and placed in a different division without consultation with the teams in that division that will be impacted?
That is not democratic and neither is it democratic for any organisation to come with a proposal that has been taken unilaterally. Wexford recognise that they are in their correct division together with the teams that are also in that division based on last year’s national league results.
Why should Wexford or any other County be placed at a stated disadvantage by a unilaterally suggestion without consultation or agreement.
How under the new proposals were teams chosen to be removed from various divisions where the competition had placed them as equals? This implies that some teams are more equal than others – why?
Wexford seeks no favours but rather is looking for and expects fair, equal and democratic treatment for all hurling counties.
A special meeting of the Wexford Management committee has been called for this Saturday afternoon in Wexford Park to discuss the situation in advance of the meeting of our clubs at County Board next Wednesday 9th of October. The Wexford Chairman, Diarmuid Deveraux will be meeting his counterparts from a number of counties in the coming days and he will be appearing on South East Radio with Alan Corcoran tomorrow (Friday) morning.
Our clubs will guide our action but there are calls from some clubs to boycott the league, from others to explore our legal options but we hope that our friends in other counties will see the unfairness of these proposals from Cork and will reject them.
