Wexford CBS……………………………..4-9
St. Colmcille’s CS (Dublin)……………1-3
The hurlers of Wexford CBS powered to Leinster success with this victory over their Dublin opponents. The CBS were dominant in defence and they showed enough class to get the vital scores up front to build up a strong lead. The Wexford school was very fast out of the blocks and were 1-6 to 0-0 in front after 15 minutes as the Dubliners were a little shell-shocked. Joe Coleman was very accurate with frees as he punished the over robust tackling of the St. Colmcille players every time.
Corner forward Ian Moran burst through the defence with a scorching run and from a difficult angle sent a searing shot to the net. The Dublin school got on top in the second quarter but they couldn’t find a way through the CBS defence. However they were awarded a close-in free which was sent to the net after 22 minutes. Their only other score of the first half was a pointed free.
CBS, through Stephen Kearney, got in for a second goal just before half-time when he got on the end of a fine passing movement and found the top corner of the net with a beautiful finish.
It was 2-6 to 1-1 at the break.
The game was far from over as the Dubliners – trained by Kilkenny player Conor Fogarty – tore into the action but they just couldn’t get the scores they needed as Evan Dunbar, Daniel Lynch, John Hamilton and Ciaran Kirwan repelled attack after attack.
Ian Moran and Stephen Kearney got their second goals in the 40th and 45th minute and that sealed victory for CBS who are coached by Willie Carley junior and Fr. Brian Whelan.
The 15 that started and the subs that came on all worked themselves into the ground which together with their hurling ability ensured the victory. Team captain Jamie McDonnell received the cup afterwards and the players celebrated with their family and friends.
