Coiste na nÓg PRO 2015 Report.
The 2015 season got underway in early Febuary with our County Minor Footballers out first on Saturday 14th with unfortunately a loss at home to Cork in round 1 of the Leinster Minor Football League
21st February Glynn Barntown officially launch the Michael Laffan U10/11 hurling Go Games blitz that took place later in the year. The main focus was for fun and full participation. The Glynn Barntown blitz catered for over 200 children which insured #everychildgetsago.
After their defeat to Cork in round 1 of the Leinster Minor Football League Wexford overcame Wicklow at home in Bree by 4-8 to 9 points.
The 2015 Coiste na nÓg Club season got underway for underage GAA players when the wexford people Minor football kicked off on Sunday 1st March this was followed by over 1,530 U-16, U-14 and U-12 Coiste na nÓg fixtures and over 528 were played by our U-10 and U-8 Clubs
Wexford Minor Hurlers got their Leinster G.A.A. Minor Hurling League campaign off to a winning start over old rivals Dublin with a score line of 1-17 to 12 points. Wexford had a bye in Round 2 and then faced Antrim at home who they beat 4-21 to 0-19, Scores from the Dublin win came from Ciaran O Connor (Rathnure) 0-5, Murtha Doyle(Oulart) 0-2,Joe O Connor 0-2(St Martins), Seamus Casey 1-1(oylegate),Jack Pettit 0-2 Ciaran Kirwan(Faythe Harriers) 0-1, Darren Codd(St Martins) 0-1,Rory O Connor(St Martins) 0-1, Liam Pender(Duffry Rovers) 0-1, Caolan Carty(Rapparees) 0-1
A inter-County Féile Peile na nÓg Blitz took place on Saturday 14th March in various venues in the three County’s Wexford, Carlow and Wicklow who Hosted this year’s National Féile, Clubs participating in the Blitz were all clubs who were competing and hosting in the National Féile Finals when it came to the South East in June.
14 young people from clubs around the county were picked from a competition entry which is held every year and sent to the Gaeltacht for a fun packed 3 weeklong stay at the most popular college in the Gaeltacht Coláiste Aodáin, Carraroe, Co. Galway. Theses scholarships are designed to improve students’ fluency and develop their understanding of Irish in a fun and educational environment. The courses are fully accredited by the Department of Education and the Department of the Gaeltacht. This years lucky winners included Garry Conroy (Oylegate), Darragh O Toole (Ballygarrett), Simon Mordaunt (Buffers Alley), Lee Pettit (Our Lady’s Island), Oisín Roche (Marshalstown Castledockrell), Peter Rowley (Oylegate), Jack Carley (Glynn Barntown), Jess Codd(Our Lady’s Island), Seán Geoghegan (Kilanerin), Andrew Murphy (Kilanerin), Lucy-Ann Kehoe (Marshalstown Castledockrell).
Early April Under the spotlight of the Feile Football U-14 hurling teams battled it out to represent Wexford in the Feile Hurling finals in the Ulster region, Rathgarogue/Cushinstown overseen Blackwater in the Division 2 Final and the Rapparees won the Division 1 final in Wexford Park.
Wexford Minor Hurlers had a convincing win over Offaly in early April when they took the Leinster Minor Hurling League title and first Leinster title of any kind since 1985 at Minor level
Wexford cruised past the faithful county in the opening half going in at halftime 10 points up and with 2 quick goals in the opening 3 mins of the 2nd half coming from Captain Seamus Casey and Michael Dwyer they continued as the finished and seen off their opponents 2013 to 2-10
Winning ways continued For Our Model Minors and The Wexford fighting Spirit showed its face again in Innovate Wexford Park where our minor hurlers defeated Laois 2-13 to 17 points in the opening round of the Electric Ireland Leinster G.A.A. Minor Hurling Championship. Wexford battled an on form Laois team and a strong wind blowing into the town end in the first half and trailed by 2-4 to 0-16 at the break the 2 goals coming from Stephen O Gorman, Wexford managed to level things up on the 45th minute with the Aid of the breeze and the 9 point 2nd half scores were enough to see Wexford through to the next round against Kilkenny.
Next up was our Minor Footballers who Booked their place in the Quarter Final of the Leinster Minor Football Championship again at home in Innovate Wexford Park with a hard fought win over Westmeath 2-14 to 2-11, Some great scores from Wexford on the Day from E Cummins; S Lyne, R Devereux, M O’Neill; J Stafford, S Doyle (1-0), M Lawlor; C Kirwan, I Carty (0-2); F Cooney, M Dwyer (0-1), T Bowler; M O’Connor, N Doyle (0-2), M Rossiter (1-9, 0-4f, 1’45). Subs: S Barden for T Bowler, S Casey for F Cooney, J Gardiner for M O’Connor, M Doyle for N Doyle.
With a little bit of luck on our side, A loss to Westmeath and a controversial minor review and a dismal adult season put mostly down to coaching could have been avoided only but for a Heart-breaking extra time 1 point defeat for Larry Colemans hurlers by All Ireland Champions Kilkenny , Wexford put in a big performance and led for the majority of the 60 minutes of normal time until Kilkenny’s Andrew Gaffney’ levelling free in extra time leaving it 1-13 each. Wexford still fought hard in extra time and it only took 1 point from Kilkenny’s half forward (former Wexford hurler James O Connor’s son)Daniel O Connor to bring a result to a nail biting game, Final Score 1-18 to 1-17.
Exciting times ahead with 48 days until the Irish Pride Féile Peil na Nog 2015 hosted by Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow things were hoting up with School visits from the GAA president Aogán Ó Fearghail and Feile Committee around Wexford but before the main event we had the Féile Hurling and Football Skills Challenge which was won by Tadhg Malone Ballyhogue and runner up Sean Dowling in the Football Skills and Eamon Doran of Craanford winner and Darragh Furlong St St. Anne’s Rathangan runner up of the Hurling Skills competition.
After a shock exit of our Minor hurlers to Westmeath all eyes were on our footballers but Despite a huge performance from the Wexford Minor Footballers in Bellefield the opposition and Leinster Champions Dublin had to work hard to earn their victory over a talented Wexford side which resulted in 3-8 TO 0-11 win for the Dubs.
Up next was our U-17 Hurling squads under Larry Coleman & selectors on the Gold team and Myles Doyle and selectors on the Purple team in the Joint Coiste na nÓg and Coaching organised Tony Doran U-17 Hurling Development Squad Tournament. Wexford Purple were only 1 score away from taking the Group B cup title against Dublin, Wexford Gold took the Group A cup title over Limerick 2-7 to 0-2 and Cork went home with the Shield. well done to all 11 teams who lined out and despite the dreadful wet weather conditions made this 1st Tony Doran Development Squad Tournament a huge success and it is hoped to be one of the main annual Development squad competitions in the Wexford underage GAA Calendar also a big thanks to all the volunteers who helped out and the clubs in Paric Charman who handed over their pitches for the day.
New Friends made and great Football Played

Cup Final between winner Austin Stacks (Kerry) and Naomh Eanna (Wexford) on a score line of 2-12 – 1-6 after extra time. Austin Stacks, had earlier beaten New York in the semi-final while Naomh Eanna, beat Eoghan Rua of Derry, again after extra time. The boys Div. 1 Shield Final was won by Athenry of Galway by a two points against Bray Emmetts. Earlier St Patricks of Wicklow beat Royal Gaels of Meath in the Girls Div 1 Cup Final, on a score line of 3-5 to 2-7 after extra time. A coincidence occurred in the Ladies Div 2, when New York took home the silverware, while their hosts Bray Emmetts for the weekend won the Div. 2 Shield. Bring on Feile na nGael 2017, were ready and waiting.
Ferns, St Martins, Buffers Alley, Innovate Wexford Park, Taghmon and Blackwater ended an Amazing Wexford Kellogg’s Cúl Camp season. Over the 5 week duration of the camps a record breaking 4,140 young Wexford GAA enthusiasts enjoyed an action-packed and fun filled camp each week an increase from the 2,890 that took part in 2014. Camps were hosted in 33 clubs around the county and we must pay a special thanks to each of the host club in helping us promote the camps and our games to the younger members of our community. Well done to all great work done by all of this year’s coaches who ensured everyone enjoyed each day and for keeping all Cúl camp members active and to our Cúl Camp ambassadors Lee Chin and Conor McDonald who visited all 33 venues and got involved in the games, answering questions and most importantly signing autographs and taking photos.
We are already looking forward to you all attending the camps next year hopefully we will see another huge increase and more clubs looking to host camps
The first Matty Forde U-17 Football Tournament took place at the end of July and Well Done to Dublin On taking the Tournament Cup in Halo Tiles Wexford GAA Centre of Excellence beating Monaghan 4-9 to 5 points, Wicklow Took the Shield beating Tyrone 3-2 to 3 and hard luck to the Wexford side just missing out on a shield final spot. The tournament got great praise from all visiting teams that made the Journey and looked forward to the 2016 tournament.
In August U-10 Teams displayed their GAA talents between races at the Wexford GAA Supporters Club Gala race night at the Enniscorthy dog track, Rapparees-Starlights GAA Club Monageer and Naomh Eanna Camoige teams, Clonee and Shelmalier Gaa girls football teams and Monageer, Castletown and Geraldine O Hranahans Hurling and Football teams took part in the 2nd benefit race night with the proceeds from the event going towards the progression and development of all our Wexford teams.
As the summer ended our Coiste na nÓg fixtures reached the knock out stages. The U-12 section started the finals of the year with horeswood landing the first football tittle at the end of August and this was the start of 20 championship finals, 22 shield finals, 24 U-12 shield finals which concluded with St Martins winning the Minor Double. During the final stages of the season 1 of many of the highlights of the year and stand out memory of the past season for me was witnessing a young U-12 Buffers Alley hurling team gracing us with such a high standard of hurling and were a joy to watch from the side-line in Wexford Park in the Coiste na nÓg U-12 Hurling finals day. Before our report of the past year finishes a special mention has to go to the Kent Stainless steel U-10 Festival of Football Over 300 U-10 Footballers from 42 Clubs around Wexford gathered onto the training fields of Halo Tiles & Bathrooms Wexford GAA Centre Of Excellence in Ferns for the 2015 blitz. Wexford Coiste na nÓg and the Coaching Office expresses a big Thanks to all who made this mammoth football blitz run smoothly, all 300 kids proudly played and represented their club and each went home happy with their 2015 Kent Stainless Steel Medal looking forward to next season. Lastly in this report of one of the busiest Coiste na nÓg seasons ever the final mention goes to Coiste na nÓg’s contribution to the further development of the Halo Tiles Ferns Centre of Excellence, At the recent opening of the new Wexford GAA Halo Tiles Centre Of Excellence which was opened by GAA President Aogan O’Fearghail Wexford GAA Coiste na nÓg management committee handed over a cheque for €80,000 to the further development of the centre.
Great Credit must go to all clubs who played in this seasons games especially in the manner each player, mentor and club supporters promoted their own club and the games in which we are all so passionate about.
Being lucky enough to have the honour to hold the roll as pro I have the job of promoting all the positives in our underage games and this task is made easier when you work alongside such positive and forward thinking people such as our Chairman Bobby, Angela, Marion, Marguerite and Noel who are focused only on making our national games for all young Wexford people to enjoy and feel safe to take part in.
Finally I would like to thank the club mentors, secretaries and PRO’s for their help in the promotion of results every week and to all clubs who send team list for programmes and ask all clubs to continue to do so for the coming season and I also mention the importance of the club PRO who use our wexordgaa.ie social media twitter and Facebook to promote all the good work been done in your club. I would like to give Jim Tyrrell of C&R Print a special mention and thanks for the past year in the excellent way he puts our GAA publications and programmes together. Finally to our Main Sponsor the people newspaper group and also the Echo I think at county and at club level we should acknowledge the professional way both Alan Aherne and Ronan Fagan promote and highlight our underage games in Wexford and look forward to working with them along with Dean Goodison, Brendan Furlong and the photographers Jim Campbell, Ger Hore, John Walsh and Ger Leacy for another year.
Let’s all work together to promote the work and find the positives in our players, Mentors, Coaches and committee members in 2016
