Wexford 1-9
Waterford 5-15
Waterford made it two wins from two in this year’s Tesco Homegrown National Football League division 3 as their greater experience and eye for goal saw them over come Wexford in Grantstown on Sunday.
Four debutants played for Wexford namely Niamh Cloake Rochford, Marica Cullen, Niamh Butler and Mary Hempenstall. While it may be worrying to see a second defeat for Wexford there are valuable lessons being learned on each day out however turning over possession cheaply is an area in need of rapid improvement for the model county.
Fiona Bennett got Wexford’s goal midway through the opening half as Wexford closed to within a point at 1-3 to 1-1 , however the skill and scoring ability of the Waterford began to bear fruit as Mags Revins rattled in 2-2 without reply.
The remainder of the opening half was split as both sides lashed over four points each with the home side gaining points through Julie Coakley, Fiona Rochford, Katie Redmond and Fiona Bennett as Waterford held a 3-8 to 1-5 half time lead.
Two goals within minutes of the resumption sealed Wexford’s fate in this game but there was fantastic battling qualities showed by Wexford especially in the defence in a battling second half display. Wexford’s scores in the second half came from Fiona Rochford (2), Siobhan Cloake and Niamh Butler as Waterford also continued to find some impressive points.
Next up for Wexford is a home tie in a venue in the north of the county against Armagh.
