Ladies Football Corner
With Noel Holohan
The 2014 ladies football season is just weeks away from beginning for the girls of county Wexford, with the 2nd of February the date for the opening round of the Tesco National League Division 3 campaign with a home game against Tipperary first up for Billy Donnelly’s charges.
The team are now back training with trial games coming up over the next seven days against Wicklow this weekend and Waterford IT next Wednesday night as the management team give fresh faces a chance to prove their worth to the purple and gold cause for 2014.
The minor team are back in hard training also within the past two weeks as they prepare for the upcoming Leinster championship that begins on the 22nd of February with a trip to Meath and a home tie with Laois in prospect and from there a place in the A or B championship will await the girls. The girls had their first practise game in the past week with a useful work out against St Mary’s from New Ross in Horeswood and with lots of Wexford girls on the New Ross schools team, it was a great chance for manager Noel Holohan to see over 40 players involved and the sides will meet again this Saturday evening in Horeswood under lights. The minor management this season has Noel Holohan as manager and he will be assisted by selectors Nicola Rochford (Ballyhogue), Anthony Butler (Volunteers) and Fiona Kehoe (Kilmore).
Paudge Brennan the under 16 team manager has his charges well on the road in the training field and trials matches in recent weeks and they continue their training with a practise match tonight and they will train again this coming Saturday and will play the county minor team in the next two weeks in a practise match.
Peter Bennett has been appointed manager of the under 14 team after a very successful Al Ireland campaign last year he will have Monica Halligan in his back room team and he is looking for people who would be interested in becoming selectors with him for the coming season and their training gets under way this Sunday in Pairc Garman from 11am to 12.30pm registration in Sarsfield Complex. For more information please contact Peter Bennett 0879020783.
This year all players under 18 must wear gum shields in matches and they are reminded that if they don’t they will not be insured.
