Gorey CS overcome FCJ Bunclody in Keevans Cup Final
The Keevans Cup decider of 2012 was this year between Gorey Community School and FCJ Bunclody. Gorey, who won the final last year, had home turf and with several county stars featuring on both sides it was sure to be an epic encounter. Despite Bunclody beating Gorey in championship this Keevans Cup Final was sure to be different as no sixth years are permitted to play.
Bunclody attacked quickly from the throw in and in the second minute Conor Farrell hit the crossbar, the first of three occasions in the first half. Gorey settled down with Fionn Doyle and Eoin Conroy scoring a point each. Chaos was let lose after seven minutes when a dangerous ball found itself in midair in the square and it took Conor Kinsella to fist it home in a skilful move. From there Gorey were all over the Bunclody side with points from Marc Halpin and Eoin Conroy but in the last three minutes flaws for home side emerged and Bunclody capitalised with points from Ryan Nolan Conor Farrell and a goal coming from the boot of Johnny Doyle. But Gorey soon regained composure with Jamie Heffernan storming through and ripping the back net with a dart of a shot. In an evenly matched game Gorey were three points ahead at halftime; 2-06 to 1-06.
Once again, Bunclody were impressive from the start of the half with points from Ryan Nolan and Shane Byrne leaving Gorey quiet until the seventh minute when Fionn Doyle slotted one over. Gorey’s Marc Halpin, James Heffernan and Mossey Morris all added points as did Conor Hatton and Johnny Doyle for Bunclody but not enough pressure was on the Gorey defence for a Bunclody goal. Eoin Conroy’s final point sealed the victory for Gorey. Despite strong performances in the air from Ryan Nolan and Shane Byrne for Bunclody, Fionn Doyle, Eoin Conroy and Marc Halpin impressed for Gorey securing the coveted Seamus Keevans Cup for the second year in a row. The Keevans Cup was presented to Gorey Community School captain, Fionn Doyle.
