This week, we said goodbye to a true Gael. Jack O’Brien was laid to rest on Thursday morning in his beloved Wexford and Buffers Alley colours. Jack was a lifelong servant of the GAA and Camogie associations in Wexford and is sadly missed by all those he volunteered with and mentored in his numerous roles across the years.
Jack, originally from Ferns, moved to Monamolin in the 1970s. Over the years, Jack held numerous positions in Buffers Alley and was involved with both adult and underage GAA and Camogie teams.
He was Gorey District Chairperson since 2010 up until the time of his death, having previously served as Secretary since 1983. He had also held the position of Chairperson of Wexford Camogie and served as a selector with both adult and underage Wexford Camogie and Coiste na nÓg teams. He served on the Wexford GAA CCC at both adult and Coiste na Óg level for many years and with responsibility for assigning referees for games.
He was an active referee for over 50 years across all codes and associations and acted as a gateperson for county and club championship games – he was known by most that passed through his gates.
In December 2018, Coiste na nÓg Loch Garman presented Jack with the Club Person of the Year and he received a much-deserved Appreciation Award from the Gorey District Committee at their Awards Night in 2019.
We remember Jack’s family, friends and all those in his community at this sad time. He will be fondly remembered across the County
