The Wexford senior football team got off to a winning start in this year’s Allianz National Football League Rionn 3 fixture versus Cavan on a scoreline of 4-9 to 1-13. Wexford opened well and when Eric Bradley found the net on the 13th minute he put Wexford 1-02 to 0-01 up. Ciaran Lyng followed with a well taken penalty leaving Wexford leading at the 20th minute, 2-02 to 0-04. Things were to get even better for Wexford when Cavan conceded an own goal. However to their credit the Cavan men steadied the ship and reeled off 5 unanswered points leaving the half time score line 3-02 to 0-09.
On resumption, Wexford doggedly fought to protect and extend their lead and by the 15th minute of the half the scoreline was Wexford 3-06 to Cavan 0-10. Then in what could have proved a turning point, Wexford’s Dathai Waters was sent of. A penalty was awarded to Cavan but the towering Anthony Masterson was equal to the task pushing the shot over the bar for a point. A few minutes later Cavan finally breached Wexford’s rearguard scoring a goal of their own to leave the scoreline 3-06 to 1-11, with 15 minutes left only a point separated the sides! Cavan continued to apply the pressure but it was Wexford who got the break with Eric Bradley popping up again with another goal, it was now 4-08 to 1-11.
Wexford held out in the face of desperate Cavan onslaughts and won on a full time result of 4-09 to 1-13. Wexford next assignment is away to Sligo next Sunday.
