Wexford got off to a good start and built up a lead after Kevin O’Grady goaled but a two goal slavo by Limerick within a minute turned the game vompletly on its head and made Wexford fight just to stay in the contest.
The Limerick captain was red carded in the second half but Limerick still maintained a two point lead. Whenever Wexford managed to point to leave just one between the sides Limerick seemd to be able to score again with ease. Then one of Wexford’s better players Michael Furlong was red carded and another defeated lked to be their lot for the day.
They are however made of sterner stuff and put massive pressure on the Limerick defence. Indeed for the final five miutes of the game the 29 players other than Anthony Masterson were camped on the Limerick half.
Brian Malone had charged upfield to score off his left to leave jus one between the sides again. Then Wexford forced a free from the sideline 45m out and Ben Brosnan stepped up to level the scores.
We were now in injury time and Wexford kept the pressure on. Again Wexford were awarded a free, not as far out as before but the pressure had increased. To score would really set the league campaign alight but to miss and only draw would leave us bottom of the table and facing relegation.
Ben Brosnan stepped up and like before he split the posts for a famous win. The large attendance of 6,700 rose to their feet to salute this fighting spirit.
After the hurlers narrow loss and the brilliant Corner Boy gig the day in the Sunny South East was perfect for the first game at Innovate Wexford Park.
Well done the footballers!
