The absence of seven Naomh Éanna starting team members proved to be the deciding factor in Glynn Barntown claiming the Feile Peile Na nÓg Division 1 County title on Monday last. Both teams had been trained to perfection as ’96 stars Billy Byrne and Tom Dempsey took charge of their respective club sides. The opening passages of play exhibited repeated attacks on the Gorey goal as Matthew Banville and Cormac Rowe fed ball through to Dylan Lyne and Jack Brazzill. Ger Dempsey converted their spirited efforts with an elegant point in the seventh minute. Glynn continued to gut out their opponents as Dylan Lyne sped through and picked out Dan Murphy who slotted the ball to the net. Jack Brazzill and Dylan Lyne managed to point to the delight of the Wexford district side. In spite of their lack of dominance, Naomh Éanna were valiant as Ryan Price reacted instantly on the goal-line while Michael Molloy and Tiernan Doyle were persistent in defence. The half ended with another remarkable save by Ryan Price.
Glynn Barntown were rampant in their second half attacks. Points from Luke Codd, James O’ Shea and Ciarán Marlow preceded Ger Dempsey’s sweetly kicked goal in the sixteenth minute. While Tiernan Doyle did create some scoring opportunities, he was halted by the clever Glynn defenders like Billy Ryan and Conor Clarke. Dylan Lyne’s last minute point sealed a fantastic victory for PJ Carley’s,Jim Ryan, Martin Brazill and Tom Dempsey’s young men. While Glynn Barntown were outstanding, their opponents loss of seven from Saturday’s round games had a harrowing effect on the Gorey side. Billy Byrne and Kieran O’ Dwyer will now refocus their strengths in preparation for the hurling equivalent in a few weeks time.
FINAL SCORE: Naomh Éanna 0-00; Glynn Barntown 2-10.
