As you know, the old analogue television service is due to be switched off on 24th October this year. Data published in May shows that there are still a quarter of a million households reliant on this service who have yet to make the switch and will be faced with a blank screen.
If you have Sky or UPC (NTL -Chorus) you already have Irish digital TV as part of your subscription package so no need to worry. It is only people that receive their Irish TV channells from a traditional aerial that neeid to make the switch, either by signing up to a subscription service from SKY, UPC etc or by getting a digital box and connecting their aerial through this to their TV.
Many of the people that will be affected by the switch to digital television are older and may be living alone or in isolated rural areas. We all know someone this will affect – maybe a family member, neighbour or friend comes to mind? Research SAORVIEW conducted last year, showed that those who have digital TV already are more than willing to lend a helping hand to others who might find making the switch that little bit more difficult.
This is campaign is a call to action to everyone in our society that helping someone with the digital switchover is easy and it matters. You can help protect someone who might be vulnerable to being mis-sold something or taken advantage of. Helping can save stress for someone who might find technology challenging. You could save them money if you can source a good deal on their behalf. If someone is confused about what they need to do, a little time from you could be the difference between this being a stressful event and a simple transition.
We have compiled a short booklet which explains digital switchover and details the many ways in which individuals and groups can get involved in the switch to digital. We would greatly appreciate if you could circulate this leaflet within your organisation and to any relevant contacts you might have.
Many of us are comfortable with changing technology, but for some, these changes are more difficult. This is a moment of change for Ireland, and we hope that you can make the most of your contacts and communications network to spread this message. With your assistance, we can do our utmost to ensure that no-one is left behind.
