Post Patron Field Day at Bellefield:
After the annual St. Mary`s Patron on Sunday 12th August old and young alike headed to Bellefield GAA Grounds where they were treated to an old fashioned Field Day reminiscent of many such occasions in the past at the Rapparees/Starlights Club. It is the clubs first attempt to rekindle an interest in the nostalgic event which was so popular down through the years and with all age groups in the Bellefield area and it is hoped that it will once again become an annual fixture on the clubs social calendar. Mirth and merriment were the order of the day at the Duck Races manned by the Maestro himself Tomas McVeigh and his son Mickey. Ed Doran and Willie Nolan looked after the Bouncing Castle as John Browne coaxed and cajoled the punters into spinning The Wheel of Fortune aided and abetted by Suzanne Donohoe, who`s other half Maurice was the man between the posts for the penalty Shoot Out. Sharon McVeigh was the lady behind the Bric a Brac stall while Aoibhe Donohoe and friend asked all and sundry to `Guess the amount of money in the jar of coins and winner take all. Padge Courtneys Hit/Kick the ball through the hole challenge was popular with many of the youngsters.
But it was the Club Wexford Speed Ball Challenge sponsored by Creane & Creane that won the day with the older players with Adrian Fenlon coming out on top with a speed of 93 mph, followed by Tomas Mahon at 84mph and Declan Ruth at 83mph. This is a wonderful gadget and one that you are going to see time and again in a wide variety of venues and special thanks to John Quinn of Creane & Creane and Club Wexford for bringing it to our Field Day and to Stephen Murphy for manning the event.
Sack race, spud and spoon race and 3 legged races and Crossbar Challenge had to be deferred because of the onslaught of torrential rain …………… quell surprise! But those who retired to the Complex could test their fishing skills at Ger Collins and Johnny Russells Bottle Stall or have a couple of games of Tombola in the bar with Pat Hall. Michael Collins and Tom Boland ran a well liked event called Hurl lotto selling squares on the field to punters at €3 a square. Kevin Foley was then asked to hurl a ball into the grid and the square the ball landed and stayed in belonged to Johnny Hyland making him the winner of €50. As the evening wound its way into the night the crowd were entertained by the Karaoke Kids …………………. Tomas Mahon and the Russell Brothers. A most enjoyable day at the club and one that is sure to be repeated. Maria Nolan One very special quest was the lovely Serena – a beautiful Snow Owl owned by Jim O`Connor, Ross Road……….
