Buffers Alley had to fight to the bitter end to secure the Gorey District title last won by the club in 2008. The final played in Ferns had to go to extra time with the Askamore men in the lead by 5 points after the first period of added time but the Alley, playing up the hill, staged a heroic come back to edge out winners by a single point much to the excitment of the many spectators who have followed this time this year.
At the end of normal time and into injury time the Alley had a 3 point cushion but in the 6 minutes of added time the Askamore men scored an additonal 3 points to bring the sides level. The score was now Askamore: 2-10 to Buffers Alley 1-13.
Extra time commenced. Night was falling and it was getting very difficult in some sections of the field to see the ball. Askamore got off to the brighter start and scored 1-2 in the first part of extra time but the Kilmuckridge/Monamolin men showed their true spirit in the second period scoring 1-4 to the Askamore’s single point to leave the final score at Buffers Alley 2-16 Askamore 3-12. Both teams appeared to find scoring much easier up the hill!!
A jubilant Tom Kavanagh accepted the cup on behalf of his team from Eddie Cullen of the Ferns-St. Aidan’s club.
Many of this winning team were involved with the club’s Under 21 Roinn 1 hurling success two weeks ago. and they were joined on the team with some of the more seasoned players! Matty Foley, the oldest on the team, won his first Junior B medal in 1982 and now 29 years later picked up his seond.
They now advance to the Co. Semi-Finals of the 2011 Junior D Hurling.
