County Board news:
The County Board met on Tuesday night and the following is a summary of meeting.
Zero tolerance for racism:
The official at centre of second incident of alleged racist abuse which is currently being investigated by the CCCC has resigned his position with Wexford GAA. The CCCC should report the findings of its investigation within the next 7 days.
County Chairman, Diarmuid Deveraux speaking in relation to the matter said, that clubs are responsible for behaviour of their players and officials and that any further incidents would be dealt with most severely.
The Wexford Chairman went on to apologise wholeheartedly to both the players and their families of the victims of the recent racism abuse cases in Wexford. He stated that he and the Wexford County Board would do all in its power to ensure that similar regrettable incidents did not happen again.
Wexford GAA reaffirm their commitment to the GAA’s ‘Give Respect, Get Respect’ code and will promote the campaign to educate our members on the issue.
Children’s Officer Dermot Howlin told a meeting of the County Board, that part of the Code Of Best Practice programme, currently being rolled out to clubs across the county this year, includes a module on ‘Give Respect, Get Respect’ and urged Clubs to ensure all members take part in this course.
PRO, Rory Murphy, said that literature to compliment the campaign would be made available to Clubs and asked Clubs to have these posters clearly displayed at their grounds.
The GAA in Wexford was and would continue to be open and inclusive and the County Chairman was calling on all members, officials and clubs to redouble their efforts and make the county a model for others to follow and ensure that the GAA was and continued to be an integral part of everyone living in Wexford’s life.
U-21 hurling management:
Tony Dempsey and his u-21 hurling selectors have stepped down following last weeks drubbing by Kilkenny. This brings to an end their 3 year term, the highlight of which was the victory in Wexford Park last June over Kilkenny. Wexford County Board thanked Tony and his team for their time and efforts.The hurling selection committee are to meet soon to advise on a successor.
New role for Seamus Fitzhenry:
Seamus Fitzhenry has been proposed as chairman of the football selection committee who will meet to advise on the appointment of new football selectors. First up is the now vacant minor and u-21 football management berths.
Coaching review:
The report from the recent comprehensive review of our coaching structures commissioned by Wexford GAA but undertaken by Leinster Council, is to be presented to Wexford GAA by the end of July. This review, is seen as critical to our long term success.
Last weekend’s attendance:
Saturday senior hurling versus Westmeath – 1,567, minor versus Laois on Sunday 1,721. Of these 52% entered free of charge, this includes OAPs, u-16, sponsor and player passes.
