A busy weekend lies ahead for all hurling followers in Wexford with the commencement of the 2011 Pettitts Senior Hurling championship on Easter weekend.
On Saturday evening in Wexford Park at 7pm the 2010 beaten finalists St. Martins play Oylegate-Glenbrien in the opening game this year. On their performances so far this year this game expected to be a close encounter. The following day Easter Sunday 24th April the Co. Champions Oulart-The Ballagh play the Wexford town side Faythe Harriers. The Co champions will be entering this game as favourites but their opponents have many young stars who are coming of age and will provide a good game for us all. This game is scheduled for Wexford Park at 5.30 pm. Following on at 7pm. we will see Ferns-St. Aidan’s play Shelmaliers. The Wexford side, Shelmaliers found it tough going last year whereas Ferns-St. Aidan’s advanced to the Semi-Finals only to be beaten by the eventual Co. Champions Oulart-The Ballagh so again a good entertaining game here.
It is great to see Bellefield GAA grounds back in action again and will stage their first Pettitts Senior Hurling game at 2pm. when St. Anne’s play newly promoted HWH Bunclody. The men from Bunclody will be hoping to cement their place in the Senior ranks and should give the men from south of the county a hell of a good game. St. Anne’s won just one game in their group in 2010 when they overcame Shelmaliers. The second game at this venue is between the two black and amber teams – Askamore and Rathnure. Askamore, who were narrowly beaten by a goal by Ferns-St. Aidan’s in the quarter-final last in a thrilling game, will be up for this game and won’t make it easy for the men from the Blackstairs. Their opponents lost to the Co. Finalists St. Martin’s by three points in the quarter-final in 2010 and will be hoping to make amends to be back at the final stages of the Pettitts championship where they have been for many years.
The remaining game this weekend will take place in O’Kennedy Park, New Ross when two teams from the Enniscorthy district lock horns – Cloughbawn and The Rapparees at 5.30pm. Again, with both teams including many under 21 players, this should go down to the wire.
