Hurling 365
Wexford GAA are proposing the following for all Schools and Clubs interested in and committed to developing enhanced and quality focused Hurling Coaching and Games in National Primary schools in the County.
Based on the criteria below, Wexford GAA, through support from the Hickey Fund, will provide a grant, payable to the school, up to a maximum of €500 for equipment detailed below. This is a hurling only initiative and is an additional support over and above the current County Board funding.
- That each local School and Club form a schools based coaching partnership
- This partnership must include additional schools based coaching over and above current schools based coaching delivered through Wexford Coaching and Games programmes and staff.
- The additional coaching must take place before, during or after School (there are models of Schools and Clubs coaching available and these will be provided for Clubs seeking to duplicate or adapt)
- It must have the full support of the School, the parents and the Club and written confirmation of that consent must be provided before any funding will be approved.
- All successful club’s in this Coaching Partnership will be required to provide a detailed report to the County Board, in written format. All Clubs participating in the Coaching Partnership will, through their Chairperson and Coaching officer, be required to provide evidence of the coaching including times, venues, frequency and the number and details of Volunteer Club Coaches.
- The following equipment may be purchased under the Club School Link; Age appropriate hurls, indoor hurls, bibs, bean bags, balls (first touch, quick touch and smart touch) cones and floor disks.
- Once agreement is reached between individual schools and clubs, the application for funding will be submitted by a nominated teacher in the school and the Club Coaching Officer.
- No equipment should be purchased until approval is provided and payment will be made to the School based on the invoice.
- Hurling 365 and the Club School Link is the responsibility of the Wexford Coaching & Games Development Committee.

Gorey Community School and Enniscorthy CBS have also agreed on Coaching schedule for new school year.

Development Squads
Our Hurlers have concluded for the year after competing well in national tournaments at U14, U15 and U16. Our U17’s were unable to field a team as National fixtures clashed with local adult fixtures. Our footballers at U14 and U15 have a few optional blitzes that they can participate in. Our U16’s have one more blitz they must complete in October.
Cul Camps
Wexford Completed our 33 camps in 32 locations. The Cul camps ran very well with no major incidents reported. Our numbers were down 7 % from the highs of last year but over 2800 children attend the camps.
Cul Camp training took place in Wexford Park from 24th – 26th June. Over 50 Coaches attended these sessions which were delivered by George O’Connor, Paudie Butler and Paul Carty. Coaches also attended a Code of best practice Course given by Dermot Howlin.
The Duffry Rovers saw a 34% increase in their numbers for 2013 so they win the Prize for most improved camp numbers.
Kilanerin with a massive 161 at Cul Camp win the prize for Camp with biggest numbers. Coiste na nOg Secretary Marion Doyle will be in touch to collect €600 equipment voucher.

Other Projects
“Green Hornet Retires”
Wexford Coaching have retired their greatly treasured green van donated by Pat Neville a few years ago as it is beyond economic repair. The van affectionately known as the “Green Hornet” has given great service without the modern niceties such as a radio, heaters, Air Con, automatic windows, fans, wipers and sometimes even breaks. The hornet kept the full time staff on their toes for many years (she wasn’t guaranteed to start first time!)
Many counties throughout Ireland get vans sponsored for Coaching and Games and it can be a great way of getting some advertising.
In any given year, Wexford Coaching and Games visit 93 primary Schools, 19 post primary schools, and 49 clubs. They assist in -providing over 1600 Go Games to Clubs and help with our 11 development Squads.
If you are interested in sponsoring a van please ring Dave Guiney on 087-2362685.
GAA Fun Day in Carlow IT
Wexford GAA completed a GAA fun day in St. Josephs on 12th Sept. 90 adults attend this event where GAA Coaches, George O’Connor, Paul Carty, JJ Doyle, Amy Ryan and Dave Guiney put them through their paces. The event is organised to encourage adults back into the GAA to Coach or to play.
