The Wexford footballers suffered their first Allianz League defeat yesterday then they went down to a powerful Derry side 0-19 to 0-10 in Wexford Park.
Wexford were slow out of the blocks only registering our first score, by Ben Brosnan, on the 18th minute, leaving the score 0-1 to 0-03. However Wexford worked hard and by the 33 minute the sides were level, six points each. At half time the visitors had reopened a gap and lead by 2 points, leaving the score 0-06 to 0-08.
Ben Brosnan claimed an early second half point for Wexford, but Derry seized control of the game surging clear by 0-14 to 0-8 with a succession of unanswered scores from Lynn (0-2), the Kielts, Charlie and James, together with McGuckin and star midfielder PJ McCloskey.
In the closing stages of the game midfielder Daithí Waters was dismissed for a second yellow card but the game was all but over at this stage. Wexford will be disappointed by the result and performance but Derry were impressive and are a serious side who appear to be closer to championship pace than our lads are at this stage. Results in the group elsewhere have contrived to leave Wexford very much still in the hunt with five team all sitting on 3 points after three games, meaning our destiny is still very much in our own hands. Next up is a challenging trip to Louth next Sunday.
