Gorey CS 2-04
Laurel Hill 3-07
Referee: Noel O’ Byrne
Venue: Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny
Limerick secondary school, Laurel Hill, bypassed the valiant efforts of Gorey Community School to claim the All Ireland School’s ‘C’ Camogie championship title in Urlingford, Co. Kilkenny earlier this afternoon. Gorey C.S. travelled with a huge set of support and colour to enthuse the team managed by Wexford Camogie star Mary Leacy as well as Muireann McCarthy and Fíonán Casey. The game was fiercely competitive from the outset as Ellen Roche led the attacks of Gorey but Limerick’s Róisín Begley kept the Munster side on top as she pointed elegantly in the fourth minute. Nevertheless, the Slaneysiders defended brutally as Donna Morrissey, Roisin Egan and Aoife Hughes fed ball through to Orla Molloy, Ellen Roche and Hayley Murphy. At the end of the first quarter, Aoife Coughlan weaved through the Wexford defence and she picked out Sinead Madden who rifled the ball to the net. Ellen Roche responded sharply when she pointed a free in the eighteen minute. The game was at boiling point throughout the first half as both captains Ciara Goland of Gorey and Limerick’s Sinead McNamara led with intent. Laura Foley’s pointed free was negated by the reliable Gorey centre forward Ellen Roche before the interval. While Laurel Hill were strong, the Wexford representatives passion hadn’t faded as they trailed at the break by 1-2 to 2 points.
Kate Mulqueen was first out of the traps in the thirty first minute as she pointed for the treaty county. However, Gorey’s Orla Molloy revived spirits as she advanced to place the ball to the back of Nicole Shanahan’s net. In spite of this, Laurel Hill soon responded as Róisín Begley assisted Sinead Madden in slotting the ball to the net in the thirty fifth minute. Caoimhe Molloy’s spirited efforts yielded a free which was pointed by Ellen Roche seconds later but Limerick still edged ahead as Roisin Howard and Kate Mulqueen pointed. The bursting attacks of Hayley Murphy and Ciara Goland preceded referee Noel O’ Byrne’s decision to award a penalty for the Wexford ladies. Castletown’s Ellen Roche silenced the jeers of Laurel Hill as her shot raised the green flag. Gorey’s revived enthusiasm was short lived however as Sinead Madden sprinted to earn herself a major. Caoimhe Molloy hand passed a point in the fiftieth minute which was soon equalled by Dearbhla Egan. Points from Limerick’s Sinead McNamara and Kate Mulqueen pierced the hearts of Gorey as Noel O’Byrne blew the full time whistle to the jubilation of Laurel Hill. The Limerick school were keenly trained thanks to their incisive management which included John McKenna, Síle Moynihan, Kay Walsh and Norma Linehan. The game was laden with talent and skill but the choice of player of the match was an easy one – Laurel Hill’s wing forward Róisín Begley was diligent throughout. The GAA department of the North Wexford school will now refocus in preparation for Tuesday’s All Ireland Community School’s Quarter final against Cashel. Final Score in Urlingford Co. Kilkenny, Laurel Hill of Limerick 3-07, Gorey Community School 2-04.
