World Handball Day 1
There is huge excitement in the handball fraternity of Wexford as the 2012 World handball championships got underway yesterday in the Citywest hotel in Dublin.
The showpiece event of the opening night saw a USA team beat Ireland 3-1 in a handball showdown in a format similar to the Ryder Cup in golf.
Wexford has a huge number of players involved in the championships and several of them were in action yesterday with Peter Hughes from Ballyhogue getting off to the perfect start with a 21-9, 21-11 win over Robbie Willoughby from Coolboy county Wicklow.
Men’s C is a grade where Darren O’Toole is among the hot favorites got underway yesterday also and nine Wexford players were involved and all but two advanced to the second round.

Two of Wexford underage stars also got into action yesterday and recorded opening round wins as Stevie Lawlor advanced in the Boys 13 and under singles on a 2-0 score line over Alan Doonan, while Bryan Kehoe from Castlebridge beat Caolann McCann 2-0 also.
Lots of Wexford players are in contention over the next 10 days with Gavin Buggy, Colin Keeling, Barry Goff, Tony Breen, Ned Buggy, Peter Hughes and Darren O’Toole among some of the favorites in action while Paul Lambert from St Joseph’s is due to line out for the Faythe Harriers Hurling team on Sunday at 3.30 pm in the county final, and then due to play David Hope from Offaly in the Men’s A singles at 9pm in the Citywest in Dublin .
