Wexford GAA this week launched a special training jersey to recognise healthcare workers in advance of championship preparations.
The navy training jersey contains almost one thousand names of healthcare workers and their places of work. A limited number of these jerseys will go on sale via O’Neills with a contribution from each sale going to Wexford Hospice Homecare.
It is part of the Wexford GAA Le Croí agus Lámh programme to recognise those in our communities who serve with heart and hand.
Wexford GAA Chairman, Micheál Martin announced, “The Wexford GAA Strategic Plan sets out the target of shining the light on our local heroes and volunteers. In 2021 we wish to recognise Wexford health-care workers who during Covid 19 have continued to provide care for patients despite exhaustion, personal risk of infection, fear of transmission to family members, illness or death of friends and colleagues, and the sad loss of many patients. We are proud of our Wexford based health care workers and those from our county who work in healthcare all over the world.”
The Le Croí agus Lámh programme will run for an initial three-year period and is supported by senior hurling manager, Davy Fitzgerald and senior football manager, Shane Roche.
Davy Fitzgerald said “Our players are tremendously proud of where they have come from and who they represent. They wear the purple and gold jersey with pride on match days and this jersey will be worn with equal pride and respect as we honour those who keep us safe.”
Shane Roche commented “We are delighted to honour our healthcare workers who have cared so well for us in the worst of times. Like every county, we have seen the impact that this disease can bring. Many of our panel have been directly impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic and we are conscious of doing all we can to stay safe and stay the course until we can return to normal times.”
Micheál Martin concluded “We look forward extending this programme in future years when we can honour our grassroots volunteers, coaches and teachers who have facilitated these players on their journey to play inter county games.”
