Wexford’s footballers went down to Galway today 1-16 to 0-11 in Pearse Stadium.
Wexford started well against the wind in the opening half and lead the game with 15 minutes to go but when Galway hit the net 11 minutes from the end, the game swung decisively in the Tribesmen favour. In the final quarter Galway pulled away outscoring us by 1-5 to 0-0.
Playing against the wind in the opening half, Wexford made the brighter start and led by 0-5 to 0-3 after 15 minutes with Shane Roche, Daithi Watters and PJ Banville getting on the scoreboard.
Galway reasserted themselves and by the 25th minute it was Galway 0-7 to Wexford’s 0-6 and at half time Wexford trailed by a single score, 0-07 to 0-08 but with the benefit of the strong wind to come in the second half the Wexford support were content.
However, it was Galway who that made the early running in the second half with points coming from Paul Conway and Gareth Bradshaw opened up a three-point gap, 0-10 to 0-7.
Wexford battled back with captain Red Barry central to this and Wexford lead with 15 minutes to go but it was then when the game was delicately poised at eleven points apiece that Galway struck for a goal grabbed the momentum.
Galway’s Michael Meehan opened up a four point gap and Wexford failed score for the remainder of the game leaving us in the relegation zone tonight with Armagh.
