Wexford Footballers and Hurlers face each other – not on the field this time but in the ring
Wexford hurlers and footballers face each other in a unique boxing tournament on Thursday 15th December in White’s Hotel, Wexford.
The stars are climbing into the boxing ring in what promises to be a mouth-watering night’s entertainment. 12 county footballers and hurlers will go head to head in this unique fundraiser which has Molloy Metals Recycling Ltd. Ballycarney, Enniscorthy as the main sponsor in addition to a host of other local sponsors. The show, which will be promoted by Wexford GAA and whitecollarboxing.ie, will be a night not to be missed. The extravaganza will take place in Whites Hotel, Wexford on Thursday 15th December with a sell-out crowd expected. Players are currently being put through their paces by local coaches Donal and Liam Walsh under the supervision of former inter-county footballer Billy Dodd.
Some of the stars in action on the night will be 2011 All-Star nominee Anthony Masterson, Wexford football captain David Murphy, Shane Roche and Brian Malone. Stephen Banville may have difficulty finding an opponent but veteran Martin Storey may the one to step up to the mark. Meanwhile, iron man Robert Hassey will be ready to take on anyone that comes his way. The Tara Rocks supporters will definitely be out in force to support their goalie Niall Breen and no doubt Cloughbawn’s Harry Kehoe will get some useful advice from his cousin, Irish International, Kevin Doyle.
Former Olympic Boxer, Cathal O’Grady of whitecollarboxing.ie is overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and interest in this event. Wexford GAA is delighted at the generosity of both companies and individuals in supporting this event. All the proceeds for this show will go towards the preparation of Wexford hurling and football teams for the coming season. Billy Walsh will be there will a keen eye looking for new talent for the Irish team.
Wexford boxing legend, Billy Walsh, maintains that some of his toughest opponents were not in the boxing ring, but on the GAA fields of Wexford. Walsh also admits the bravery, dedication and passion of the participants is inspiring and he knows that when the final bell rings, the boxers will be glad they “fought the good fight” for club and county.
