Last Saturday saw our Wexford Football Talent Academy squads participate in the National Day of football blitzes arranged around the province. This was the third outing for all squads in blitz format competitions, and again our sides showed true Wexford spirit and plenty of skill and talent.
Our Under 14 squad travelled to Offaly where they took on Westmeath and Dublin. After a successful outing against Westmeath, they marginally came up short against Dublin, but showed plenty of promise and potential for the future.
Our Under 15 squad made the trip to Hawkfield in Kildare and like the 14 squad, opened up with a good win, in this case over Roscommon. Armagh proved to be a step above this and powered to victory, and the lads fell just short to a late Offaly goal to be pipped in their final game on the day.
The Under 16 squad, short some regular starters, made the long journey to Portmarnock where they took on 2 strong sides in Mayo and Dublin and ultimately both were too strong for our team on the day. In their last outing, they fell just short against Offaly in a game where they showed plenty of potential but things just wouldnt go right on the day.
The day overall proved there is plenty of footballing talent in our young players, and the future is most certainly bright if we continue the hard work and determination shown throughout the year.
The Talent Academy Workgroup would like to thank all managers and mentors for their time and commitment given to aid the development of these squads throughout the year. Without their efforts and tireless work, we would not be able to showcase our talented youngsters potential. We must also thank all players who trained hard throughout the year and would hope they both improved on all their skills and footballing ability, and also learned about the step up in level required to play at elite county level.
We have a promising future, so we must ensure we can do what we can to harness the potential and talents these players have and make sure we do our very best to keep Wexford competing at the top level of intercounty football.
