Cormac Smyth and Malachy Whelan booked their place in the final of the Wexford Farmers’ Co-op Senior doubles in the 60 x 30 court by winning a very good semi- final over the past week that went right down to the wire.
The Castlebridge pair could not have gotten off to a worse start as they were thrashed 21-5 in the opening set by Mikie Berry and Jim Berry from Barntown. However, the black and yellow clubmen dug deep and won the second set 21-15 and continued the turn in fortunes to take the third and deciding set 21-17.
Paddy Haughton from St Mary’s booked his place in the junior singles final with a comfortable 21-3, 21-14 win over Frank Maddock from St Martin’s in their semi final played out last week.
The Junior C singles final is set to be a battle between Walter Lawlor (Castlebridge) and Ronan Greene from Barntown as both players accounted for St Mary’s opponents in the semi finals last week. Walter Lawlor took care of Tommy Hardy on a 21-11, 21-14 score line while Greene beat Fintan Furlong in similar fashion on a 21-10, 21-11 score line.
The final pairings for the Junior D doubles competition are decided and it will be an all Bridgetown affair after the club celebrated two semi- final wins over neighbours Ballymitty in the semi finals played last week. In the first semi final Alan Reid and PJ Martin came through a three game match before seeing off John Byrne and Alan Diskin on a 6-21, 21-17, 21-16 score , meanwhile their club mates Paddy Rowe and David Kelly won a final berth with a 21-16, 21-7 win over Jason Byrne and Barry Byrne.
Mick Armstrong won the battle in an enthralling Masters A singles semi final, as the Davidstown clubman eventually saw off a determind challenge from Coolgreaney’s Damien Kelly. Armstrong took the opening set on a 21-16 score line, but he was rocked back on his heels in the second set 21-7 by Kelly, the third set was a classic and it went right to the wire before Mick Armstrong won the vital point to take the set 21-20.
Benny Doyle (Horeswood) advanced to the final of the Golden Masters A singles with a flawless 21-6,21-7 win over Brendan Murphy from Castlebridge.
The final of the Golden Master B singles will be an all St Martin’s affair as small court regulars Nicky Curran and John Bail will square off after both beating big court men from Ballymitty. Nicky Curran won his semi final by beating Miley Byrne (Ballymitty ) on a 21-14, 21-15 score line, while John Bail beat Aidan Sinnott on a 16-21, 21-12, 21-3 score line to set up an all Maroon and White clad final.
