Wexford Farmers Co-op 40 x 20 Championship Semi Finals
This year’s Wexford Farmers Co-op 40 x 20 Senior singles final will see Ballyhogue up against St Joseph’s as Peter Hughes and Gavin Buggy both qualified last Saturday from the semi finals in the beautiful court in Coolgraney.
Peter Hughes who has been on a steady rise for the past number of years is in the senior final on merit after winning a tough encounter with Jason Murphy from Castlebridge. The opening set went 21-4 to the Ballyhogue man however he was made work much harder for a 21-17 win in the second set.
Gavin Buggy who recently transferred from St Mary’s to St Joseph’s had a very comfortable semi final win beating Miley Connors from Barntown in quick style 21-7, 21-3 and it has the makings of a very interesting final in two weeks.
There is a youthful look about the intermediate singles final this year as Michael Busher from Bridgetown and Galeon Riordan from Ballyhogue will meet in what promises to be an exciting final. Michael Busher was made work well into overtime by Barry McWilliams from Horeswood, as the Bridgetown man was victorious 21-18, 10-21, 21-12. In the second semi final Galeon Riordan from Ballyhogue continued his good run of form by beating Darren O’Toole from Coolgraney 21-12, 21-15.
Paddy Haughton (St Mary’s) and Damien Kelly (Coolgraney) will meet in the final of the junior singles .In last week’s semi finals Haughton accounted for Justin Heffernan from Oulart 21-19, 21-13, while Damien Kelly was the winner against Fergal McWilliams from Horeswood, after a close 21-17 opening set, Kelly drove home the second set 21-1 to reach the final.
Paddy Cheevers advanced to the final of the Junior B singles with a fine 21-9, 21-17 win over Robert Byrne from Bridgetown; the Horeswood man will meet Shane Rossiter (Ballymitty) in the final after he accounted for Dom Stafford (Davidstown) 21-6, 21-16.
JR Finn won a very close semi final in the junior C singles , as the Ballymitty man just about took care of business against Kevin Doyle from Davidstown on a 16-21, 21-14, 21-15 score. In the second semi final Peter McGrath from Coolgraney was far too strong for Paddy Cheevers from Horeswood, the Gorey district man winning on a 21-2, 21-10 score.
IN the junior C doubles semi final there was plenty of close and good handball. Niall and PJ Leacy from St Joseph’s advanced after beating John Murphy and James Nolan from Kilmyshall 20-21, 21-6, 21-18. The other semi final saw Kevin Doyle and Tom O’Shea from Davidstown bring home the bacon on a 21-15, 21-15 score line over Ballymitty pair JR Finn and Alan O’Neill.
Richard Flynn was the first man to book a final spot in the Junior D singles as he beat Paddy Curran from St Martin’s 21-9, 21-17, an all Templeudigan final was denied however as Tom Cummins from Horeswood spoiled the party by beat Robbie Codd 21-11, 21-4.
Frank Maddock (Ballymitty) won his semi final of the Masters A singles in impressive fashion beating the hard hitting James Freeman from Davidstown on a 21-11, 21-19 score line.
The Masters B singles will be as Castlebridge and Ballymitty affair as John Roche won while wearing the black and amber colours 21-6, 21-17 against Damien Kelly from Coolgraney, while Rossiter in blue and white was a 21-15, 21-5 winner over Ricky Barron from Barntown.
The Golden Masters A singles final pits Tony Breen (Templeudigan) against Pechelli English from Davidstown. While Tony Breen received a walk over in his semi final the second semi final was a 21-12, 21-17 win for English over Declan Hart from Horeswood.
Pechelli English is also into the final of the Golden Masters A doubles after he and Eamon Bowe were too good for Tom Byrne and Jimmy Dunne from Kilmyshall as the Davidstown men won through 21-7, 21-17.
Jim Doyle (Barntown) was a comfortable 21-5, 21-7 winner in the semi final of the Diamond Masters Singles as he beat Pat Leacy from ST Joseph’s.
The Ladies Junior Doubles semi final will see Marguerite Gore and Holly Hynes from St Mary’s play Tanya O’Toole and Una Byrne from Coolgraney , while the later pair received a walk over in their semi final Gore and Hynes were too strong winning 21-2, 21-4 against Chloe Cashe and Roisin Walsh. The last semi final of the week saw Olivia Sweeny does the job on the night over Julie Kearny both from St Joseph’s with Sweeny winning through 21-7, 21-4
