Sarsfields 1-08 St Martins 2-04
Despite taking a 1-02 to no score lead after 10 mins St Martins eventually lost out to a more determined Sarsfields team in the Wexford District Junior B Football final played in blustery conditions in Tagoat on Sunday.
A well worked move lead to an early goal by Eoin Rackard followed by 2 well taken points from frees by St Martins wing back Darren Jordan gave them a comfortable lead playing against the wind.
Sarsfields were guilty of being wasteful with the numerous chances that came their way with Lee Smith missing a golden chance of a Sarsfields goal when he choose to flick a ball to the net rather than taking it in his hand when he was clear through on goal.It was not until the 23 minute that Sarsfields got on the scoreboard with a well taken free from Jack Ennis who went on to register 2 further frees before half time , Sarsfields wing forward John Clancy struck a powerful shot against the cross bar but from the resultant break Colm O’Corcora scored a well taken point for Sarsfields.
Davis Bernie St Martins corner forward had a golden opportunity of a goal but shot wide, the first half finished with Niall Dempsey St Martins and David Gannon Sarsfields exchanging points leaving St Martins ahead 1-03 to 0-05 .
Darren Jordan opened St Martins score line in the second half with a further free in the 33 min which was followed by Sarsfields scores from Jack Ennis and Ben O’Brien, who had been introduced at half time , to leave the sides level.
In the period both sides missed chances before St Martins centre forward Dylan Fawsitt struck for an opportunist goal which was quickly followed by a Sarsfields goal from Ian O’ Leary when play broke down as St Martins over elaborated in trying to clear the lines.
Sarsfields looked to be in trouble when Ben O’ Brien was shown a straight Red Card for an off the ball incident but despite being reduced in numbers Sarsfields Adrian Campbell struck in the 59th min for what was to prove the winning score, St Martins had a last minute chance to level the scores to put the game into extra time when they were awarded a 21 yard free to the right of the goal but Padraig Morrissey’s shot got carried in the wind and went wide, shortly after the referee blew the final whistle.
