Under 17 Hurling Inter District League
New Ross and Wexford progress to Final
A very entertaining round of games in the inaugral U17 Hurling Inter District League sees top dogs New Ross progress to meet Wexford District in the Final.
The tournament group stage played during April saw over 80 U17s tog out for their districts and put themselves in the reckoning for participation in the U17 County set up.
The New Ross District was the star performer with mentors PJ O’Farrell, Adrian Morrissey, Denis Nolan and Charlie Walsh producing a squad with strength and depth.
The rematch against Myles Doyle’s Wexford District in the final promises to be a game of real quality.
Great credit is due also to other mentors in the districts who worked hard to prepare their squads for the tournament.
Martin Byrne, Johnny Ryan, Trevor Moulton and Darragh Kenny will continue to be involved in the development of our U17 hurlers.
The six games played produced 34 goals and 148 points –an average of more than 30 scores per game.
Over 30 clubs in the county had representatives on the four district teams.
The matches were arranged to coincide with Easter holidays and a break in the minor championship so that the impact on clubs and schools would be minimised.
A number of the games were captured on video and also viewed live by the Wexford Minor Hurling Selectors.
All of this will be considered in putting together two U17 panels to represent Wexford in some practice matches during May and an intercounty tournament to be held in June.
Players who took part in the League will be contacted over the next week in relation to these U17 squads, which form an important part of the process of identifying talent for the 2015 Minor Campaign.
