Wexford footballers lost their final group game in this years Born Na Mona, O’Byrne Cup today in Newbridge.
They started well and led by 3 pts to 2 after 14 minutes. PJ Banville, Shane Roche and Kevin Gore on the mark for Wexford.
Johnny Doyle frees keeping Kildare in touch. He continued in that vein and at the break Kildare led by 5 pts to 4. Anthony Masterson adding Wexford’s 4th with a long range free.
The second half didnt start so well for the visitors as Kildare opened an 11 pts to 4 lead after 46 minutes of the game.
Wexford opened their second half account when Kevin Gore scored his second point then Red Barry, home from his travels, made it 12-7 on 54 mins.
Kildare added another point before Wexford burst into life. Andy Doyle, PJ Banville and Shane Roche added 4 unanswered points to leave the score at Kildare 13 to Wexford’s 11 with time running out.
A fantastic finish ensued with Wexford pressing hard and they were rewarded when in injury time Shane Roche goaled to put them 1-11 to 0-13 up and all set for an unlikely victory.
Sadly Kildare got a break straight from the kickout and scored a goal with virtually time up.
