CLARE END 38-YEAR WAIT FOR ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE TITLE
The Allianz Hurling League Division 1 title is back in Clare for the first time since 1978 after a stunning one-point win over Waterford in the replay in Semple Stadium.
A late point in stoppage time by Tony Kelly earned Clare a dramatic win after Waterford had led for most of the way.
It was heart-breaking for Waterford who were on the verge of winning the Allianz Hurling League title for a second successive year, only to be caught by two late points from Kelly, who finished on 1-6.
The win ended Clare’s 38-year wait for their fourth Allianz Hurling League title and brought down the curtain on what has been a very exciting campaign across the divisions.
Clare’s win brings them alongside Wexford (also on four titles) on an Allianz Hurling League Roll of Honour led by Tipperary (19 titles), Kilkenny (17), Cork (14), Limerick (11), Galway (9).
As with Waterford last year, Clare won the title from Allianz Hurling League Division 1B, which they topped before beating Allianz Hurling Division 1A sides, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford.
Clare’s win means they are unbeaten this year, with a record of 12 wins and a draw from 13 games in the Munster League and Allianz League.
Clare and Waterford will resume their intense rivalry on June 5th when they meet in the Munster semi-final.
From a Wexford point of view, our two best performances in the 2016 AHL were against Clare and Waterford in Innovate Wexford Park. Although we lost both games, it was only in injury time that we went behind and the team performance on both days was exactly what management, the panel and supporters sought all year.
While the recent set back of Andrew Shores injury robs the team of vital skills, we can look forward to the double header in Croke Park with anticipation of a high class performance.
