There has been a lot of talk about burnout, overtraining, injuries etc and as a result the Player Welfare Mentor System has been set up.
Talented young GAA players often play on a number of teams and in several competitions at the same time. If there is an expectation to train fully with each team and a lack of communication between management teams, players will be at increased risk of overtraining, injury and burnout.
As part of a pilot programme by the GAA, Wexford will have a Player Welfare Mentor in 2015. Brian Malone has been selected by the County Committee to mentor young players in County U16, U18 and College/University Hurling & Football squads. He will address players and parents in these squads at a meeting, on Wednesday February 18th in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy starting at 7.30pm, on the basic principles of training, avoiding overtraining and burnout, injury prevention and management and life skills. It is important that you advise all players and their parents in the age groups listed about this meeting and encourage them to attend.
After the information evening Brian will be accessible by telephone and e-mail should players need someone to listen to their concerns and refer them to the appropriate people to address them.
