Under the umbrella of Wexford GAA Coiste na nOg, a new U17 Hurling District League is to be launched in the coming weeks . It is hoped that it will become an annual tournament. The purpose of the tournament is to offer high level competition to all of the County’s most talented Under 17 hurlers, regardless of the size or level of their Club. At the end of the League two squads will be chosen to compete in national competition and ultimately develop the pool of elite players who will hurl at Senior level for Wexford.
The District Competition will run during April and involve each district playing each other twice, with ‘A’ and ‘B’ Finals taking place at the end of April. All efforts will be made to minimise the impact on Clubs playing Minor Championship in March and there is a fully integrated approach with Wexford Minor Hurlers and Footballers More news of the official launch and the calendar for games and training will be publicised over the next week.
Killurin is the venue next Saturday April 5th for the launch of the Wexford U17 Hurling District League with an 11am throw in. Wexford District and Enniscorthy District will contest the first game of the month long competition. All districts will play each other twice with most games taking place during the easter school holidays. The main purpose of the tournament is to increase the level of competitive hurling experienced by this age group and to promote genuine competition for places on county U17 squads and the current minor panel.
In advance of the launch all four districts will participate in a county training session under the watchful eye of the minor selectors. This takes place in Farmleigh,Marshalstown at 6.15 pm on Tuesday night April 1st. A big turnout is expected from all four districts. Players will be contacted directly by their district coaches to confirm their participation.
