The semi finals of the Feile Na nGael Division 1 hurling championships were held in Gorey this afternoon.
Naomh Eanna and Faythe Harriers contested for a place in this years final as Eoin Molloy and Tiernan Doyle’s points opened Gorey’s scoring account. Their efforts preceded Charlie McGuckin who swivelled the ball to the back of the net in the fifth minute. While Colum Clancy attacked bravely for the harriers, Aaron Byrne was persistent in attack for Gorey. However, Wexford Town keeper Jake Clancy stunted Byrne’s endeavours. The combined efforts of David Christie and Eoghan Kennedy yielded a goal for Gorey which was carbon copied by Tiarnan Doyle minutes later to indicate a Gorey lead at halftime on a scoreline of 3-2 to no score.
The second half was of a similar fashion as Sean Delaney and Charlie McGuckin pointed. Charlie McGuckin capitalised on this advance as he slotted the ball to the net. Despite Gorey’s dominance, Cathal Kirwan, Terry Lucey and Mickey Kelly gave James Heneberry the opportunity to point in the sixth minute. However Eoin Molloy’s point in the final minute sealed a near-perfect victory for Gorey as they triumphed on a scoreline of 4-5 to a point.
St Martin’s and Glynn Barntown fought a gruelling encounter in the second pairing. Piercestown’s Jordan Hayes and Kyle Firman pointed before Jack Brazzill pulled one back for Glynn before the interval. Jordan Hayes’ points in the second half gave St Martins a three point surplus. However that advantage was soon to be negated. In the final minute Ger Dempsey valiantly blitzed the maroon-coloured defence to earn a free which Jack Brazzill placed in the bottom right hand corner of the net meaning that extra time was needed.
The extension of play showed how courageous Ciarán Marlow and Rory Cullen were for their respective sides. Nevertheless, two pointed frees from Kyle Firman assured St Martins of victory. In a repeat of last years final, Naomh Eanna will take on St Martins in Wexford park on Easter Monday at Half 1.
