Leinster 60 x 30 Handball Championships
It was a fantastic week for Wexford handball in the opening round of the Leinster big alley championships with six wins from six Wexford groups.
Cormac Smyth is re finding his form in the big court and delivered a huge win in the opening round of the intermediate singles as he took on and beat Daniel Love in a three set gripping contest. Smyth showed early signs of success in this game by taking the opening set 21-12, but Love dished out the same medicine in the second set with a similar score win. However it was the Castlebridge man who found the best shots in the decider to take a 21-13 win and a place in the quarter finals.
Four wins from four was the terrific result in the Junior Singles .David Kenny got the ball roling in emphatic fashion by hammering Shem Kelly from Kilkenny on a 21-6, 21-12 score line. Miley Connors made a delightful return to the purple and gold jersey after a long absense with a 21-8, 21-15 win over Canice QUigley from Kilkenny, while Canice Pratt was the third Kilkeny man to feel the pinch of Wexford opposition as Shane Rossiter put a fantastic 21-14, 21-17 win together . Paul Lambert had to pull out all the stops to beat Pat O’Donnell from Wicklow, at the jaws of defeat as he trailed 21-20, 20-12 but some how recovered to take the second set 21-20 before winning the final game 21-12 as O’Donnell crumbled with the fitness of Lambert.
Jimmy Moran and David Cleary rounded off a fantastic week for Wexford with a fine win over Danny and David Burke from Kilkenny as the Ballymitty duo had success with a 11-21, 21-10, 21-10 win.
