A Leinster GAA focus group chaired by Iar-Uachtarán Liam O’Neill, identified a major gap in the majority of county’s games programmes, showing that many competitions were not starting until in or around early April. This gap in conjunction with, the identification of, in some cases very large margins of victory in games led us to the conclusion that there is a need for cross county activity to provide more games, more games of a similar standard for teams and also to lengthen the playing season around the province, so players are getting more exposure to Gaelic Games for longer each year.

After meeting County Steering Committees and getting their agreement to clear their fixtures calendars, we took the above findings into account, while supplementing the current internal fixtures and Liam presented this new initiative from Leinster GAA to run cross county leagues on the dates below.
