Hughes beat old foe Lambert in Senior Singles opener.
Peter Hughes (Ballyhogue) sent out a warning to everyone in the Senior Singles championships this year when he handed out a comfortable defeat to Paul Lambert (St Joseph’s) in the opening round of the open senior singles. Hughes got the better of his former partner Lambert on a 21-16, 21-10 score line.
There was a full fixture list in the intermediate singles and there were some very good games across this grade. Darren O’Toole (Coolgraney) got over his disappointment in Leinster by defeating Justin Heffernan from Oulart on a 21-10, 21-16 score line. Horeswood’s Barry McWilliams was the winner in a very close game against Mick Armstrong from Davidstown, with McWilliams winning 21-19, 21-18. Frank Maddock from Ballymitty got his first win since his recent transfer from St Martin’s by beating Tom Murphy from Oulart on a 21-11, 21-17 score line. Tony Breen (Templeudigan) continued his recent run of good form with a comfortable 21-8, 21-17 win over Paddy Haughton from St Mary’s. Pechelli English (Davidstown) came through a very tough three set encounter with James Bergin from St Martin’s with the Davidstown man succeeding on a 9-21, 21-9, 21-20 score line. Malachy Whelan put an end to Frank Maddock’s run in the championship by beating the Ballymitty man in a remarkable game where the score line read 19-21, 21-1, 21-0 in favour of the Castlebridge man. Galeon Riordan (Ballyhogue) continues to show his fine promise for the future by handing out a 21-18, 21-11 win to Felix Doran from Barntown.
There were two games in the opening round of the Junior C singles played last week. JR Finn was a comfortable winner over Alan Armstrong from Davidstown on a 21-9, 21-3 score line, while John Murphy from Kilmyshall was a comfortable 21-0, 21-19 winner over Tommy Hardy from St Mary’s.
Another Kilmyshall winner in the first round of the Junior D singles was Timmy Farrell as he defeated Jody Shaughnessy from Coolgraney on a 21-13, 21-16 score line. Michael O’Connor from Templeudigan was also a winner in the Junior D singles as he won on a similar 21-13, 21-16 score line over Barry Byrne from Ballymitty.
There were four games in the masters B singles and Ricky Barron grabbed a win in the first of these games beating Tomas O’Shea from Davidstown 21-13, 21-12. Eugene English from Ballyhogue overcame an opening set 21-16 defeat to turn over Mick Donovan from Barntown 21-0, 21-12. Dom Stafford from Davidstown powered to a 21-5, 21-14 win over Richard Ryan from Horeswood, while Tom Connors (Barntown) progressed also when he defeated Tom Cummins from Horeswood on a 21-9, 21-13 score line.
There was one game played in the beginners singles and Colm Browne (Coolgraney) was a 21-16, 21-9 winner over Jason Kehoe from St Joseph’s.
Also the Ladies Junior singles got under way last week and Chloe cash was a 20-21, 21-17, 21-16 winner over Tanya O’Toole from Coolgraney.
