Winter Handball league play off chase heats up.
The action in the Wexford winter handball league stepped up a few gears over the past week with a total of six games being played in the premier division with some vital results. Peter Funchion from Kells in Kilkenny put himself right in the mix for a semi final spot with two wins during the past week. In his first outing of the week he outwitted his brother Patrick Funchion while in his second game of the week he was a straight sets winner over Paul Lambert from St Joseph’s.
Michael Ducksy Walsh from Talbot’s Inch in Kilkenny had a mixed week but remains in the driving seat for qualification. His first outing was a productive one as he defeated Jerome Willoughby from Coolboy but his second game of the week ended in a two one defeat to another contender Gavin Buggy from St Joseph’s.
Peter Hughes from Ballyhogue revived his qualification hopes with a win over Keith Kavanagh from Coolboy also in the premier division.
In division one there was two games last week Chris Doyle from Coolboy took the points against John Rossiter from Garryhill, while a very good game between Daniel Fenlon (Garryhill) and Ciaran Neary (Talbots Inch) saw the result go in favour of the Carlow man.
Peter McGrath (Coolgraney) more accustomed to his prowess in the big alley showed his skills in the small court by defeating Pat Quaile from Coolboy, while Barry McWilliams from Horeswood had a great win by beating James Gregan from Coolboy in division two.
Damien Kelly from Coolgraney tasted success and defeat in division three as he got the better of Michael O’Neill from Templeudigan before tasting defeat at the hands of hard hitting Mick Armstrong from Davidstown. In the same division Diarmuid Burke from Kells was the top man in his clash with Kevin Barrett from Tinryland.
David Redmond from Templeudigan continues to improve towards the play offs in division five as he beat Justin Heffernan from Oulart and in the same division another man chasing a last four spot is Sean Ryan from Garryhill as he beat Eammon Rice from Arklow.
In division six Eamon Purcell (Windgap) took the honours against Drew Keogh from Arklow and also in division six there was a win for Eugene English from Ballyhogue as he beat Richie Culleton from St Joseph’s.
There was a spread of wins across division seven as Keith Armstrong (Davidstown), Bryan Kehoe (Castlebridge), Kevin Doyle (Davidstown) and Robert Doyle (St Joseph’s) all had their hands in the winning circle.
Sonny Sheils (Ballyhogue) and Kevin Cowman (Templeudigan) were the big winners in division eight last week as they both had two wins. Sheils got victories over Tommy Armstrong (Kilmyshall) and John Moran (Ballymitty), while Kevin Cowman had two wins also defeating Stevie Lawlor (Bridgetown) and John Moran (Ballymitty). Paddy Doyle from Coolboy also had a win by beating Tommy Armstrong and Declan Jordan from Coolboy beat his club rival Paddy Doyle.
Mick Carty (St Joseph’s) won the only game in division nine by defeating Kevin Rossiter from Garryhill while the single game in division 10 was won by Paddy Curran from St Martin’s as he beat David Creane from Davidstown.
In the Women’s divisions Mary Phelan from Clogh had a crucial win over Marguerite Gore from St Mary’s while in division two there was wins for Cora Doyle (St Joseph’s) and Tara Doyle (St Martin’s).
