Plenty of new blood and surprises as Liam Dunne names his first championship side as Wexford hurling manager to play Offaly on Saturday night (7pm). On appointment Dunne stated his aim was to uncover as many players as possible, giving opportunities to impress and despite a disappointing league this aim has largely been realised using on average 20 players per game. The result is that we’ve 4 debutants including a number recently out of the minor ranks. While the Tipperary exile and St Martin’s man Stephen Murphy also gets a chance to shine in the purple and gold. The result is an exciting looking, young team with arguably our strongest bench in a number of years with the likes of Darren Stamp, Stephen Banville and Harry Kehoe all held in reserve and who are bound to be sprung at some stage.
Offaly are the bookies favourites for the tie and it’s hard to argue otherwise but this is championship and the form book goes out the window. Best of luck the lads and we’re urging every Wexford supporter to make a special effort and travel to Tullamore. This just could be one of those nights to remember and you know you want to be able to say ‘I was there’.
