A recent meeting of Coiste na nÓg and adult club chairpersons agreed an aligned plan under one vision for the promotion of Coaching and Games in clubs and schools, supported by Wexford County Board.
The process, which commenced in early 2024, saw consultation through club and school surveys, a forum of club chairpersons, and the presentation of an aligned vision. The agreed vision for all stakeholders is ‘To develop all players to be the best that they can be’. A series of actions is to be taken in each area.
The plan includes a review of the underage Go Games programme, to ensure adequate time is provided for players to develop the skills of both hurling and Gaelic football. The provision of supports to primary and secondary schools was also clarified under this plan.
The significant investment into the Integrated Athletic Development Plan for post-primary schools was highlighted as an example where a clear and concise programme can initiate benefits. A recent survey of primary and post primary schools has identified high levels of satisfaction with progress in recent years, while also pinpointing areas where progress is required.
Further initiatives such as the expansion of Hurling 365 and specific focus areas for coaching supports within schools were also outlined.
Under this plan, all clubs will be required to appoint a club Coaching Officer and a coaching committee who will take responsibility for the development of a plan for their club. Significant support will be provided by Wexford GAA, through current staff and new part-time Coach Developer positions to provide sustained support for clubs.
Once clubs have confirmed their Coaching Officer and coaching committees, Wexford GAA will provide a coaching template and guidance document to assist clubs in formulating clear and measurable objectives. Regular check-ins are scheduled to assist clubs, with all plans due for submission by February 1st, 2025.
One of the key proposals within the plan is to enhance the games programme for underage players and maximise the time young players get to develop the skills of hurling and football.
Wexford GAA Chairman, Micheál Martin, outlined the importance of the plan, stating: ‘There is a huge amount of positive work taking place across our clubs and schools with participation rates higher than ever. The aim of this process is to align all stakeholders under one vision, to ensure a consistency and to set out an agreed set of actions in each area.
‘Our Coaching and Games team will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the plan, with clear timelines for each action. There will be engagement and support to clubs and a clear plan of support for schools in defined areas to build upon the good work that is taking place.
‘Wexford GAA invests over €500,000 every year in Coaching and Games, and this plan will bring accountability to that investment,’ he said.
Full details of the action plan have been circulated to clubs.
