BORD NA MÓNA LEINSTER GAA SERIES DRAWS TO A CLOSE AS DOWN TAKE KEHOE SHIELD
THREE LEINSTER COUNTIES AND TWO FROM ULSTER TAKE BORD NA MÓNA LEINSTER GAA SERIES SUCCESS IN 2013
Down captured the Bord na Móna Kehoe Shield on Saturday, as the Bord na Móna Leinster GAA Series drew to a close for 2013.
The victory means that three Leinster counties, and two teams from outside the province have taken honours in this year’s competitions, an indicator of the strength of the teams involved and vindication to open it up to more ‘visitors’ than ever before.
In football Kildare lifted the O’Byrne Cup after an extra-time success over Dublin in a spectacular floodlit encounter.
In Hurling, Dublin took Walsh Cup Hurling honours thanks to a hard-earned win over Wexford; Walsh Shield honours went Antrim’s way following a floodlit battle with the students of DIT at Casement Park.
Kildare took the Bord na Móna Kehoe Cup for the first time in their history, while on Saturday Down’s Kehoe Shield win over Roscommon brought the 2013 Bord na Móna Leinster GAA Series action to an end.
Paul Braniff fired 11 points as Down claimed the Bord na Móna Kehoe Shield for the first time after a hard-earned 0-19 to 1-14 win over Roscommon at St. Loman’s 3G pitch in Mullingar on Saturday.
A game which offered plenty of niggle and bite in the opening half, turned into a scoring masterclass from the Ulster side in the final quarter, as they bagged 10 unanswered points to secure the title.
These scores coming from the 51st minute until the end, including six from Portaferry clubman Braniff to take honours.
Earlier, Roscommon were full value for their 1-11 to 0-6 interval lead, with Seamus Qualter’s side scoring a 10th minute goal from Ronan O’Meara.
O’Meara latching onto a pass from Naos Connaughton, before firing past Down keeper Stephen Keith
This came in a spell which saw Roscommon score 1-3 without reply between the ninth and 11th minutes.
Cormac Kelly and Jerry Fallon on target with the Westerners points.
Down kept in touch thanks to Braniff, James Coyle, Connor Dorrian and Aaron O’Prey.
Roscommon led by 1-12 to 0-6 three minutes after the restart, following good work by free-taker Fallon, but Down dug deep.
However, Coyle and Michael Ennis were unlucky not to breach the Roscommon goal-mouth with goal chances in the 50th and 52nd minutes.
Coyle denied following a safe from Roscommon captain Padraig Dolan, and Ennis failed to sneak the ball to the net after Dolan was caught out of the goalmouth.
Down kept up their pressure and only conceded two points in the final 30 minutes as the Mourne County took control at midfield.
Braniff was sublime from placed balls, while Coyle, Andy Savage and O’Prey were also on target late on as Down claimed a two-point win.
After the game Down captain Ben Toner received the Kehoe Shield from Leinster GAA PRO John Greene.
