Wexford handball celebrated a double All Ireland weekend as Gavin Buggy, Paul Lambert and Peter Hughes all took victories over the weekend.
A year after winning the Junior B doubles title, Paul Lambert and Peter Hughes put together a second perfect season in succession to win the Junior Doubles All Ireland title at the expense of Roscommon duo Cormac O’Brien and Philip O’Connor in their win.
The Wexford duo dominated from pillar to post in a ruthless performance that saw them race into an early lead that eventually saw them close out the opening set on a 21-12 score line. The Ballyhogue / St Joseph’s combination continued to be the stronger players in the second set and eventually sent the Rossies packing on a 21-10 score line.
With junior B and Junior All Ireland titles in the bag now, hopefully Intermediate will follow soon for this magnificent pair of handballers and next weekend Paul Lambert will look to win the Junior singles title to add to his national medal collection of the last two seasons.
Gavin Buggy retained his Over 35 singles title as he once again defeated his rival David Maloney from Tipperary. In a repeat of last year’s final, Buggy once again held the better ammunition of handball shots in his collection as he eventually wore down his Tipperary opponent.
The opening set was crucial in this match and Buggy delivered on a 21-15 score line. The second game was an epic with both players battling for every shot; Gavin sealed the deal however and took the Over 35 singles title for the second season in a row on a 21-18 score line.
It has been a great season so far in the 40 x 20 court for Wexford handball with more All Ireland finals to come next weekend things may get even better.
