GAA All Ireland Handball 40 x 20 series
Gavin Buggy was knocked out of the GAA All Ireland senior singles championships at the quarter-final stage last Saturday as he found the challenge of number two seed Charlie Shanks too hot to handle. Gavin who is more known for his prowess in the bigger 60 x 30 alley dedicates huge time and effort to improve his small alley status and once again this season he has progressed further in the championship.
However, on Saturday Charlie Shanks last year’s beaten finalist looked intent on getting back to the final again as he beat Gavin Buggy on a 21-13, 21-13 score line with Gavin Buggy certainly giving a very good account of himself, although not turning over the Armagh man on this occasion Gavin will look forward to the All Ireland over 35 singles final in the coming weeks when he will look to defend his All Ireland title.
Paul Lambert, a training partner of Buggy’s and an ever rising talent of the handball game, continued his remarkable run of results that sees him nearly two seasons unbeaten in the small court outside of the county championships. Coming off the back of the All Ireland Junior B singles title last year, it was going to be interesting to see how Paul got on this season but he picked up where he left off and is now on the cusp of an All Ireland Junior singles title after his semi final success last weekend when he beat off the challenge of Terry Kiernan from Cavan on a 21-16,21-5 score line.
Ned Buggy and Gareth Somers had a much easier route to an All Ireland final than their county colleague Lambert as they received a walkover in the semi final of the Diamond Masters A doubles last weekend.
